Gene Dawson

Gene Dawson

Gene E. Dawson began his work as the Supervisor of Security at Towson State College in 1967. A former state policeman and graduate of the FBI National Academy, Dawson used his background experience to transform TSC's security protocols and practices with a focus on student safety on campus.

During his seventeen years as the head of Campus Security, he oversaw the institution of an updated fire safety and evacuation plan, a lock and card system in the dorms, a Student Police Force, public-relations officers, gates in the parking garages, locks on the elevator and the quad in the Tower, and more. When Towson State University Police became independent from Baltimore County Police in 1976, he hoped to create another campus police division that would primarily focus on the academic buildings as opposed to the original police force that would oversee recreational areas.

Dawson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1982, which led to his retirement on December 1, 1984. Though his time at TSU was cut short, his impact can be seen through the work of Towson University's current police department.
