Compton N. Crook was a biology professor at what was then Towson State College (TSC). He worked at the school from 1939 to 1974, totaling thirty-five years. During his time as a professor, he published over ten short stories, many of which were reprinted in his following novels and award-winning anthologies.
After retiring from teaching at TSC, Crook continued to write under the pseudonym Stephen Tall. He published many books including The Stardust Voyages (1975), The Ramsgate Paradox (1976), and The People Beyond the Wall (1980). The Compton Crook/Stephen Tall Memorial Award is now presented each year to the debut science fiction, fantasy, or horror book of a selected author.
