Ellery Eskelin

Ellery Eskelin graduated from Towson in 1982. He was in the Towson State University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of legendary composer Hank Levy. Eskelin would later return to the school as an artist-in-residence under the Murray Jazz Residency. Through this program, he taught master classes, performed with faculty and students, and mentored undergraduate musicians.  

Eskelin moved to New York City in 1983 notably joined “Baron Down,” which sparked his interest in experimental, new music. He formed a group with accordionist Andrea Parkins and drummer Jim Black who went on to write over 50 compositions and tour the US, Europe, and Canada. 

 He was a recipient of a Chamber Music America French-American Exchange grant in 2007 and 2014, and a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant in 2009. Today, he continues to teach saxophone and improvisation lessons in New York City.
