Dr. William H. Burdick was one of the founders of the American Academy of Physical Education and a faculty member in Towson's Physical Education department from 1919-1925. Burdick is considered to be the "Father of Physical Education" in the state of Maryland. For many years, he was also the director of the Playground Athletic League (PAL) of Maryland.
After leaving Towson, Burdick became the Supervisor of Physical Education for the State Department of Education as well as continuing to head PAL. Burdick Hall is named in his honor.
