Abstract

The current study investigated high rates of alcohol use seen among transgender individuals through a focus on proximal stressors from the gender minority stress model. Proximal stressors are the thoughts and feelings that are created and maintained as a result of direct and indirect experiences with prejudiced events and are conceptualized to include internalized transphobia (IT), anticipated stigma (AS), and concealment. Gender dysphoria has recently been proposed as a proximal stressor due to its interactive nature with both external triggers and internal processes but had not been included in previous models. A confirmatory factor analysis showed that IT, AS, concealment, and gender dysphoria reflected proximal stress. Further, a structural equation model showed drinking to cope mediated the relationship between proximal stress and alcohol use. Findings suggest that gender dysphoria should be understood as a proximal stressor and that drinking to cope mediates the relationship between proximal stress and alcohol use.
