KENTUCKY STATE STOPS TIGER WIN STREAK
That old adage of "All good things must cane to an end" finally proved true last
Saturday as Kentucky State visited Burdick Field and shattered a pair of 11 game winning
streaks and any hopes Tcwsan had for a second straight unbeaten season, as the Thorobreds
topped the Tigers, 16-7. In this first meeting ever between the two schools, Kentucky
State quarterback Curt Sullivan passed for 165 yards and two touchdowns to pace the
Thorobred offense. The TD strikes were to Melvin Sykes (6 receptions for 67 yards) and All-
American candidate Leonard Elston (4 receptions for 71 yards) , and gave the visitors a
14-0 lead after three quarters that they never relinquished. Towson's Dan Dullea carr-
pleted 9 tosses in 19 attempts for 123 yards, but was intercepted three times before being
replaced in the fourth quarter by sophomore Carter Willson. In the Tigers' two games to
date, Dullea is 18 for 30, good for 230 yards and two TD's. James Boyd rushed for 78
yards in 14 carries Saturday, giving him 147 yards in the first two contests. Towson's
only score came in the fourth quarter when Willson hit Mike Hoey from 20 yards out to cut
the lead to 14-7, but when Willson was caught in the end zone for a two point safety late
in the final period, the Tigers' hopes for pulling the game out of the fire fell with him.
SOCCER, CROSS-COUNTRY SQUADS SPLIT A PAIR
Jack McDonald's soccer team continued their winning ways with a 7-1 rout over •
Miller sville State last Wednesday. Senior Mike Bruno tallied four times for the Tigers,
giving him seven goals on the season. John Pipitone hit for his third and fourth goals of
the year, and Tim Maher got his first as Tcwson improved its record to 3-1. The Tigers
will get a chance to improve on that mark when they play host to Mt. St. Mary's College
this Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The Tiger cross-country squad, under the direction of Ned Britt, traveled to the
Loyola College campus Tuesday for their first meet since a rather disheartening Lebanon
Valley Invitational showing, and were disappointed again at the hands of the Greyhound
harriers. Loyola won by a count of 20-36 (low score wins) , thus improving their season
mark to 1-2 and dropping the Tigers to 0-1. Towson travels to Miller sville State for
their next effort this Wednesday at 3 p.m. , then visit frostburg State Saturday at 2 p.m.
FIELD HOCKEY SET TO START
Our woman's field hockey team makes their 1975 debut this week, and the outlook
is optimistic for another successful season like those in the recent past. Last year's
girls were the Baltimore College Field Hockey Champions, defeating Western Maryland, Essex
C.C., Harford C.C., and Frostburg en route to the crown. Coaches Margaret Faulkner and
T.i nrte Reiter are hopeful that the combination of those returning combined with the always
premising crop of newcomers will be enough to guarantee success. The junior varsity opened
their season Tuesday with Essex C.C. here at Towson, and the varsity will join the Jayvees
for a Pound-Robin Invitational at Mary Washington College this Friday and Saturday, Sept.
26 and 27. Besides Mary Washington, Madison College and Salisbury State will also be
in action. Games will begin Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. Towson State will
return heme to face West Chester State next Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 3:30 p.m.
