TIGERS BLANK BULLDOGS AT HOMECOMING
Homecoming proved to be a major success, at least as far as the Towson varsity football
team is concerned, as the Tigers ripped Bowie State Saturday, 30-0. Once again it was our
tough defense which forced some early Bowie miscues that put Towson ahead 13-0 before 4-|
minutes had elapsed in the opening quarter. From then on it was clear sailing as the
Tigers earned their fifth victory against two losses, while the Bulldoge dropped their
fourth out of five.
Dulaney's High School Band had barely finished the National Anthem and the crowd of
3,150 hadn't even managed to get comfortable in their seats before the Tigers were within
striking distance of paydirt. Randy Bielski kicked off for Towson, and Bowie had exactly
three plays from scrimmage before quarterback Ricardo Mitchell fumbled at his own 13-yard
line. Don Gibson pounced on the fumble, setting up the offense in enviable field position.
Two three yard losses moved the Tigers back to the Bowie 19, where quarterback Dan Dullea
drilled a shot to flanker Mike Bennett for our first touchdown of the day. Randy Bielski
missed his first extra point in 15 attempts and Towson settled for a 6-0 advantage. On the
ensuing kick-off, the Bulldogs fumbled the return and Kevin Gorabieski recovered at the
Bulldog l6. Six playe later senior Mike Maloney took it in from two yards out, and Bielski's
boot gave the Tigers a 13-0 lead with 10:57 still remaining in the opening quarter. The
only other scoring in the first half came on Bielski's 23-yard field goal with 8:45 left
to go.
In the second half Towson engineered one of the better drives of the season, starting
at their own 17-yard line and moving 83 yards in 10 plays for the TD. The big plays in the
march were a 23-yard pass from Dullea to tight end Skip Chase, a 15-yarder to Bennett,
and a pass interference penalty against the Bulldogs that put the ball on the 1-yard line.
From there Maloney found the way and Bielski's kick made it 23-0 with about six minutes re¬
maining in the third stanza. On the next series Bowie failed to move the ball from their own
nine and a poor punt gave Towson super field position again, this time at the Bulldog 39-
A five yard scamper by freshman Tom Jones and a 15-yard personal foul penalty put Towson at
the Bowie 19, and Jones romped into the end zone on the next play and the Tigers were out
in front 30-0 after Bielski's conversion. The fourth quarter was spent keeping Bowie out
of the end zone, as the Bulldogs got as close as the Tiger 25, 21, and the one without getting
a point on the scoreboard. Once, the Bulldogs thought they had scored on a one yard scamper,
but an illegal procedure penalty brought it back to the six, and a loss of 15 yards- on a
quarterback sack stifled the Bowie offense again.
The Tiger defense has not allowed a touchdown in the last 13 quarters of play to set a
new school record. Another mark was set as the Tigers also recorded their third shut out of
the season, the most ever in one campaign. Towson now has blanked the opponent seven times
in eight years the Tigers have played football. Offensively, Dullea completed nine of 17
passes for 134 yards and one TD. His longest was a 25-yard strike to Ken Snoots on the
second play of the third quarter. Jones led all Tiger rushers with 47 yards in six carries,
but this phase of our game was not impressive as Towson gained only 43 yards in 34 carries
on the ground. Bennett and Chase each had three receptions, and Snoots had a pair. For
Bowie, Mitchell was l6 of 42 in the air for 125 yards, while the Bulldogs managed only 42
yards in 38 carries rushing. Rick Simmons had eight receptions for 67 yards for Bowie.
The Tigers now face rival Salisbury State this Saturday night on Burdick Field at 8 p.m.
The Sea Gulls are 6-1 on the season and defeated Towson last season, 15-14. They lead the
all-time series between the two schools, 2-1. Man to look out for is running back Levi Shade.
