TIGERS EARN 50th CAREER WIN
Phil Albert's Tigers won their 50th career football victory last Saturday night by
whipping Guilford College 31-22 in the Towson Stadium.
The Tigers, now 50-39-2 since beginning varsity football back in 1969, overcame an
early 3-0 Quaker lead with an explosive 17 point second quarter and eventually rolled to a
31-16 advantage early in the fourth period.
Phil now packs his 3-1 Tigers off to Albany, New York for a contest with the State
University of New York at Albany Great Danes, NCAA Division III semifinalists last year
with an 8-2 record.
"Albany executes well on offense and runs out of the wishbone," Albert said. "We've
seen them on film and they are explosive. We're going to have to be right on our game if
we're to survive this one."
We were right on against Guilford, piling up 345 yards total offense to only 170 for
the Quakers, a team we had never beaten before.
Sophomore quarterback Ron Meehan was 19 of 29 (66%) for 230 yards and a 42 yard
touchdown strike to his favorite target, sophomore split end Ken Snoots. Ron spread his
passes around, however, hitting eight different receivers.
Senior fullback Rick Biel ski finished the night with the best production of any
Tiger back this season, picking up 91 yards on 19 carries and scoring two touchdowns.
"Ron had a good night, spraying the ball around," said Albert. "But I was especially
pleased with Rick's output. We've needed more out of the ground game and he certainly
came through the other night."
Junior linebacker Bryan Brouse led the defense, recording nine tackles and inter¬
cepting one pass which the Tigers turned into their final touchdown. Sophomore linebacker
Keith Lowthert had 13 tackles including two for losses. Keith is subbing for injured
starter junior Tony Tsonis who is expected back this week for the Albany game.
The Tigers scored on marches of 74, 36, 75 and 74 yards with the final tally coming
two plays after Bryan's theft at the Quaker nine.
A couple of blocked Tiger punts resulted in two Guilford touchdowns. Another was
helped by a pass interference call at the Towson 29, setting up a first down.
The Great Danes are one-beaten also, having bowed in their opener 14-8 to Kings
Point. They clubbed Southern Connecticut 28-12 and over ran Brockport State 42-28 in a
game which saw 42 points scored in the fourth quarter. Albany lost its first game of the
1977 season also and then went on to register eight consecutive victories before being
knocked down by NCAA Division III national champion Widener 33-15 in the semifinals.
Albany relies on a thunderous ground attack which yields 264 yards per game. Full¬
back Mike Miradella and halfback Levi Louis are the main culprits. Quaterback Brad
Aldrich has had his troubles throwing, hitting only 6 of 22 this year. Last Saturday
night against Brockport he was 0 for 10 but back up quarterback Terry Walsh threw two
completions on fake punts.
Although not exceptionally big, strongside tackle Rich Aufiero (5-11, 195) and guard
Dan Cohen (5-10, 200) manage to open holes and pave the way. The Danes rolled up 393
yards rushing against Brockport and are capable of that each time out.
Defensively the Danes look to cornerback Ken Paulo, the team's leading tackier,
linebacker John Veruto and defensive end Jim Dignan, who scored on a blocked punt in the
Brockport tussle.
The Tigers and Danes have met once before, back in 1970 when Towson' s two-year-old
varsity smothered Albany's club team 69-14.
"There's no comparison from that game to the one coming up," said Phil. "We're both
completely different from seven years ago. It's going to be a good game on Saturday and I
don't think anybody is going to run away with anything."
Kickoff is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. The game will be aired over WCVT-FM back to
Bal timore.
