TIGERS TO FACE STIFF CHALLENGE IN GLASSBORO
The Tigers got a big game out of sophomore linebacker Ron Nichols to beat Frostburg
State College 14-0 as we earned their fourth victory of the season in six starts.
The Tigers will be looking for their fifth win when we travel to Glassboro, New
Jersey this Friday night to take on Glassboro State College beginning at 8:00 p.m.
Ron, subbing for injured starter Bryan Brouse at right inside linebacker, intercepted
a school record three passes, returning one for a touchdown, to lead the Tigers. The 6-2,
214 pound ring leader from Camden, New Jersey, making his first start in a Towson uni¬
form, also took part in 12 tackles.
His first interception came late in the second quarter at the Bobcat 33. Six plays
later quarterback Ron Meehan hit split end Ken Snoots with an eight yard scoring strike.
In the fourth quarter Ron swiped a Mark Allen pass in the end zone and returned it to the
Tiger 15 to halt a Frostburg threat. With 2:45 left to play in the game Nichols inter¬
cepted his third pass, racing 31 yards for a touchdown.
The three interceptions establishes a new single game record at Towson. Sophomore
cornerback Ed Aleshire, also in his first start of the year, finished the day with two
interceptions. The five thefts set a new single game team record. For his performance
Ron was selected the ECAC Rookie of the Week.
"Frostburg is a much better team than its record indicates," said Tiger head coach
Phil Albert of the Bobcats' 1-5 mark. "I knew they'd be emotional playing us and coupled
with the penalty situation I didn't think we'd ever get off our 15 yard line."
We were hit with a record 14 penalties for 114 yards. The Bobcats actually outgained
us 192 yards total offense to only 171. Frostburg picked up 150 of that total on the
ground.
The Tigers will need to shore up their defense against the rush in preparation for
Friday night's date with Glassboro and Dino Hall, the NCAA's premiere Division III ball
carrier.
"Hall is probably the best runningback we're going to see this year," said Phil.
"But he isn't the whole show. They do a lot of things well."
Hall is averaging 146.3 yards per game on the ground while the Profs, as a team, are
averaging 193.5 yards per game. He has scored eight touchdowns and is among the national
leaders in scoring too.
Despite his 108 yards last Saturday the Profs bowed 21-3 to previously winless
Kurtztown State College. The loss dropped them to 4-2 on the year.
The Tigers will also have to put up with Glassboro quarterback Herb Neilio who has
passed for 860 yards and seven touchdowns this year. Split end Bo Nil and has been his
favorite target, having hauled in 11 receptions for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Hall
has grabbed 10 passes for 101 yards.
We came out of the Frostburg scrap with several injuries. Senior fullback Rick
Bielski took a shot in the ribs. His appearance against the Profs is tentative. Starting
right quard Chuck Riegger suffered a knee injury and is not expected to be ready for
Glassboro. Freshman John Youngberg will go in his place.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools. Each has won twice. Glass¬
boro earned a 21-18 victory last year after the Tigers, who failed to convert on three
PAT's, squandered an 18-7 halftime lead.
"Our guys are going to have to realize the kind of team we'll be playing," said
Phil. "If they don't, it could.be a long night for us. Glassboro is a ball control
team and we'll have to be concerned with getting the ball from them. Offensively we'll
have to be sharper."
The Profs have been ranked as high as seventh in the national Division III poll this
year. They are the third team on our schedule to appear in the top ten. James Madison,
which beat Towson 21-14, and Ithaca College, which lies ahead, are ranked.
Friday night's game will be carried on WCVT-FM (89.7) and broadcast back to Balti¬
more.
TIGER BOOTERS REST AFTER WIN
The Tigers will take an 11 day break following last Saturday night's 4-0 blanking of
Catholic University and give their 6-5 record a rest.
"It was a good win for us," said Tiger head coach Rich Bartos. "I would have hated
to have to live with a loss for 11 days."
The Tigers are idle now until October 25 when we travel to George Mason University
for a 2:00 p.m. battle with the Patriots.
Tim Bruno emerged as the hero in the Catholic victory, hitting for two goals and
assisting on another. Jim Bruno tallied once and assisted on another with Tom Morgan
also chipping in a score.
