CAGERS OPEN WITH THREE AT HOME
Our men's basketball team opens its first Division I season this Saturday night when
we take on American University at 8:00 at the Towson Center. Saturday's game will be the
first of three straight at home, with North Carol ina-Wil mi ngton coming to the Towson
Center on Monday, December 3 at 8:00 and Fairleigh-Dickinson playing our Tigers Wednesday,
December 5 at 8:00.
Coach Vince Angotti, returning from a year's sabattical leave, is glad to have his
first three games at home, considering the youth of the team. "We're very fortunate to
play our first three at home and have 12 home games in our first year of Division I,"
Vince pointed out. "When you first enter Division I like we are, you expect to travel a
great deal. Having 12 games at home out of 26 is great."
We're going to put a very young team on the floor in the opener, according to Vince.
However, he's not auite sure who will start. 6-6 junior transfer Joe Miller is a likely
starter while 6-5 freshman forward Michael Sharpe has been impressive during pre-season.
6-4 freshman David Bonner will also see a lot of action on the front line. 6-4 senior
Lloyd Tucker, 6-4 junior transfer Bill Smith, and 6-5 freshmen Barry Scott and Mark Cooley
also figure to play a great deal.
In the backcourt, 6-1 junior transfer Mike Lyles and 6-4 senior Mike Dukes will
likely share point guard duties while 6-2 junior Dave Allen and 6-2 freshman Donald Leslie
are slated for action at the other guard. Leslie, a 30.4 scorer at Douglass High School,
has made a great deal of progress in the last few weeks. Further depth is supplied by 6-1
junior Mark Roussey, 6-3 freshman Gerry Sandusky, and 5-7 freshman Dwayne Purnell.
American was 14-13 last year under Coach Gary Williams. The Eagles, who play in the
East Coast Conference, have four returning starters, including 6-5 junior Russell "Boo"
Bowers. Bowers, a legitimate All-American candidate, averaged 22.2 points per game and
7.9 rebounds last year.
"It's going to be an interesting year as well as an exciting year," predicts Vince.
"I can't wait to get it going."
WOMEN'S CAGERS OPEN FRIDAY
With Breezy Bishop filling in for Coach Rita Yerkes (on sabattical leave at Northern
Illinois University), the Towson State women's basketball team gets its season underway
Friday, November 30 against the University of Richmond at 8:00 at the Towson Center.
With only three letter winners returning from last year's 17-11 team, there will be
plenty of new faces on the squad when we face Richmond. Only Vonda Wilkins returns from
the starting five of last year. She'll probably be joined on the front line by senior
transfer Janet Flora, an All-American at Essex Community College two years ago. Others
battling for starting spots at the forwards are junior Kim Keene, junior Donna Linkous,
and 5-9 Nancy Schatz.
