TIGER GRIDDERS
ШОР
SECOND STRAIGHT
Injuries and the month of November have not been kind to the Towson State Tiger
football team. Coming off a successful month of October that saw them win all four games
played in that period, the Tiger gridders were anxiously awaiting the chance to close
out the season with a flurry of victories that could have reached seven straight at one
time.
But a rash of injuries hit five Tiger starters, including standout running back
Jimmy Boyd, and Towson has now dropped two straight games to teams they easily handled
a year ago. The most recent loss came last Saturday afternoon in Virginia, when the
Tigers of Hampden-Sydney pounced on the Tigers of Towson State, 2h-lli. The defeat
dropped Towson* s mark on the season to S-h with one game remaining, while Hampden-
Sydney is now 6-2 with likewise one contest left to play.
The major thorn in Towson* s side last Saturday (besides the injury bugaboo, of
course) was the brother combination of Bill and Ben Newell. Bill, the starting Tiger
wide receiver, caught a pair of touchdown tosses while brother Ben threw for two TD’s
as well. Another tactic employed to throw Towson off guard was the option play, added
last week to the Hampden-Sydney attack, according to head coach Stokeley Fulton.
"We mixed up our options to confuse them," Fulton noted, "and it worked great in the
first half. They (Towson) did a heckuva job defensing against it in the second half,
though."
Actually, our Tigers broke out on top first in the second quarter when Mike
Maloney, playing with a bruised hip himself, took the ball in from three yards out for
a 7-0 Towson advantage. But Hampden-Sydney knotted the count on a 32-yard touchdown
Pess, then took the lead before the end of the first half on a 17-yard pass play from
Ben to Bill Newell with just 26 seconds remaining before the gun. Our Tigers tied
the contest at lJb-all when Jeff Herrick (also the Towson punter) scored from two yards
out and Fhil Rizas hit his second extra point of the day.
Hampden-Sydney shut Towson down for the remainder of the game offensively, and
added 10 points themselves to gain the margin of victory. Bill Newell caught a 20-yard
TD strike from backup quarterback Dale Marks to give H-S a 21-lU lead, and a 31-yard
field goal in the final stanza sealed Towson* s defeat. Six TSC turnovers (three lost
fumbles and three interceptions) did not aid the Tigers' offensive output, either.
Hampden-Sydney, meanwhile, had an overwhelming statistical edge and committed but one
turnover.
Maloney was the leading rusher on the afternoon for Towson, picking up ll±0 yards on
27 carries, nearly half of the Tigers' 323 total offensive yardage on the day. The 27
carries was also the most rushing attempts by a Towson running back this season. Most
ever in one game was by Larry Jones (36) against Frostburg in 1973. Maloney now has
gained 5U7 yards in 102 carries on the '75 campaign with seven TD*s, second on the
Tiger squad to Jimmy Boyd, out for the rest of the season with a broken fibula bone of
the left foot. Boyd's final stats on the season read 739 yards gained on 119 carries
(6.2 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns. K.P. Doyle ranks third on the squad in
rushing with 66 attempts for 36U yards and one TD, followed by Herrick who has gained
163 yards in only 20 carries (8.2 yards per carry) and three TD' s including the one last
Saturday.
Tiger quarterback Dan Dullea had some problems with some of his receivers who
seemed to be hit with "drop-itis" at critical moments. The junior signal-caller hit on
7 of 19 passes on the day for 8U yards, giving him 10U completions in 186 attempts on
the season for a 55.9$, with eight TD tosses. Towson' s leading receiver, Bill McDonald,
was in on but one reception last Saturday good for five yards. He now has 26 on the
year for 370 yards and two touchdowns. Skip Chase (blanked Saturday) has 20 for 357 yards
and three TD's, Mike Hoey (also blanked against H-S) has 18 for 216 yards and four TD's,
followed by Mike Bennett, K.P. Doyle, Boyd, and Jim Sandusky. Bennett caught three last
Saturday for 50 yards, giving him lU on the season for
18Ц
yards. Sandusky brought down
two aerials for 28 yards (he now has 8 this year for 120 yards) and Doyle had one for
