TIGERS DROP HEARTBREAKER, FACE THREE-GAME WEEK
Our men's varsity lacrosse team, facing a pair of impressive university division
foes and an equally tough college division nemesis, dropped three of four games and new
have three games rertaining to
паке
a stretch drive for a good seeding in the NCAA Playoffs
which begin on May 12. The Tigers most recent setback was a hear tbreaker , as the University
of Maryland-Baltimore County squad invaded Towson's Burdick Field Sunday night and nipped
TSC, 11-10, in a Mason-Dixon contest that was switched from Saturday night because of heavy
rain and poor field conditions . The loss was especially tough on our Tigers, for not
only did it give the Retrievers their second straight Mason-Dixon title, but it made our
chances of finishing with a winning record in the regular season a formidable task. We
must now win our renaining three games to insure a winning mark, and the tough University
of Baltimore Bees and the no. 1 ranked Roanoke Maroons still lie ahead.
Towson led for the better part of Sunday night's contest and held an 8-5 lead with
four minutes remaining in the third stanza, but UMBC then hit for six unanswered goals
to take an 11-8 advantage and the Retrievers were never headed. Tom Nelson paced the
Tiger attack with four goals, while Toimy Kidd had a pair of assists. Jeff Jones went
the distance in the goal and finished with 20 saves. Last Wednesday afternoon coach Carl
Runk was able to clear the bench as his Tigers swamped Morgan State U. , 21-11, on a make¬
shift field that apparently doubles for a baseball diamond. Everyone played in the rout
with the Golden Bears, who had only 15 players on the roster and whose lacrosse program
is badly in need of help. Only a week earlier the Tigers had fallen bo the University of
Virginia, 16-15 in overtime, in a game protested by coach Runk after Larry Andersen was
assessed a three-minute penalty for using an illegal stick. The Tigers also dropped a
13-9 decision to Washington and Lee, as Towson lost four of five to university division
powers this season.
Our Tigers now wrap up the regular season with three games this week, two of which
are at heme on Burdick Field. Tuesday the Tigers traveled to Enmittsburg bo face Mount
St. Mary's, a team that was manhandled by UMBC recently, 28-8. Wednesday night, May 5,
the Tigers host the University of Baltimore Bees in a night game here at Towson at 8 p.m.
Coach Dick Edell's Bees defeated Fairleigh Dickinson in the mud Saturday, 9-5, and are
now 11-2 on the season. The number one college division team, the Roanoke Maroons,
face the Tigers here Saturday afternoon in a 2 p.m. battle. The opening round of the
NCAA playoffs begin on Wednesday, May 12, followed by the quarterfinals on May 15 and
the semi-finals on May 19. Our Tigers will need a big week to earn a good seed in the
tournament which leads to the college division finals at UMBC on May 22.
MEN'S TRACK FINISHES A STRONG SECOND
Our men's outdoor track squad finished in second place Saturday in the Mason-Dixon
conference track and field championships held at Enmitsburg, Maryland. Mount St. Mary's,
the host school in the event, took the title with 75 points, but the Tigers were close all
the way and placed second with 62. Salisbury State was next with 61, followed in order by
Catholic University (49) , UMBC (25) , George Mason (6) , and Loyola College (4) .
WOMEN STICKERS CAPTURE STATE TOURNAMENT HERE
Coach Maggie Faulkner's women's varsity lacrosse team copped the State Women's
Lacrosse Tournament for the third consecutive year, defeating the University of Maryland,
7-6, in the finale bo earn the crcwn. Earlier in the tourney, the Tigers swamped Johns
Hopkins, 24-1, and topped Salisbury State, 9-2. Only two days before the tourney, the
Tigers defeated Maryland, 10-8, in a regular season battle. Karen Russ scored in the last
two minutes of the game in the tournament final to give Towson the deciding margin. Barb
Kimball and Karen Mallonee were named to the First Team of the Southern District All-Star
squad thanks to fine performances in the tourney, while Ann Kinball and Sue Woodcock were
Second Team selections. If victorious, they will advance to the South Team and possibly
the Finals, as there are no collegiate championships in women's lacrosse. Following the
state tourney, the Tigers have won two of three games to raise the season record to 7-4.
Towson nipped Goucher College, 9-8 the day following tie event, then fell to national
powerhouse West Chester, 18-4, before defeating the University of Delaware, 10-7. Barb
Kinball had two goals in the loss at West Chester and five more in the wan over Delaware
bo highlight the Towson attack. On Tuesday, May 11, the Tigers close out the regular
season with a contest here at Towson with Glassboro State at 3:30 p.m.
