MORE BASKETBALL .
The next time you see Vince Angotti , Roger Dickens, Brian Matthews, Rita Yerkes and
all the members of our women's varsity basketball squad you ought to take a minute to
shake their hands.
Congratulations are in order for Vince, our men's varsity basketball coach, who has
just been voted Coach of the Year in District II by the National Association for Basket¬
ball Coaches. He'll be honored this weekend in St. Louis when that organization holds its
annual awards banquet in conjunction with the NCAA's Division I national championship.
Vince, by the way, has requested and has been granted a one year's leave of absence
from coaching for the 1978-79 academic year to pursue graduate study leading to a doctoral
degree in physical education. His top assistant, Mike Raudabaugh, will assume command of
the team. Vince, who owns a 195-110 record at TSU, will return the following year.
Two of Vince's stars who led us to a 26-4 this past season and the number three
ranking in the country, are being showered with post-season honors. Dickens, a 6-3 senior
guard, was recently named to Basketball Weekly's All American team. Both he and his
partner in the backcourt, 6-5 senior Matthews, have been chosen to play in an All Star
game in Portsmouth, Va. this week. They are only two of three Division II players on the
rosters. Everyone else is from Division I. In addition to this Brian has been selected
to play for a United States contingent in a series of All Star games in Mexico City.
He'll leave April 4 and return April 12.
Our women's varsity squad captured a big title early this week when they walked away
from Bates College in Lewistown, Maine with the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics for Women's Region I tournament crown in hand.
Rita's women swamped Husson College 76-58 in the semifinals and then clubbed top
seeded St. John's Fisher College 70-61 for the championship. Barbara Kropfelder led us in
the title game with 18 points with Ann Well ham and Donna Wagner chipping in 10 each.
Vonda Wilkens grabbed 13 rebounds as we stretched our record to 15-7. _
MEN'S LACROSSE SQUAD BATTLES YOUTH
Our men's varsity lacrosse season should be a week old but bad weather forced the
cancellation of our opener with Johns Hopkins on March 15. Maybe the postponement is a
blessing in disguise.
Head coach Carl Runk's 32 man roster includes 10 freshmen, eight sophomores, nine
juniors and only six seniors. Fifteen of that number are newcomers to the program.
The bright spot on this, year's squad is the attack where juniors Tom Wagner and
Jules Siskind return. Wagner scored 21 goals and added 14 assists last season while
Siskind led the way in assists with 29. Joining them will be junior Steve Schabdach who
is moving from midfield. Freshman Billy Tall, at 6-2, is also in the running and makes an
excellent target.
Paul Mullen, last year's leading scorer with 41 goals and 12 assists, is also being
moved, jumping from attack to midfield in an effort to bolster our middie corps. Jim
Bernhardt, a transfer from Hofstra, will faceoff and be joined by Chris Ciletti and Tom
Watson on the first midfield. Mullen will spearhead the second midfield along with Jim
Guidera and John Como, also holdovers from last year's 8-8 squad.
The goalie situation is unsettled because of the graduation of All American Paul
Russo. Two freshmen, Tim Hastings and Jim Tanico, are battling it out now for the net
minding rights. The graduation of Bill Treadway and Ralph Ruocco has caused more problems
on defense. Sophomores Dan Semkow and Allen Mowbray, junior Steve Hornish and senior
Fran Duffy, who shared the playing time last year, will make up the backbone of this
year's defense.
Our game with the Blue Jays has been rescheduled for March 28 at Homewood at 3:00
p.m. We also had to move our home opener with Salisbury State from March 29 to March 31.
Game time is still 3:00 p.m. for the Sea Gull contest. Everything else on the schedule
remains the same.
WOMEN STICKERS HOPEFUL
Last year coach Maggie Faulkner's women faced a rebuilding year and finished with a
6-8-1 record, our first losing season ever. But we've got experience this year and we
expect to turn that around.
Leading the way this season will be junior Karen Ebling, a transfer from Lock Haven
State where she was an All College I and District II choice in addition to being her
team's Most Valuable Player. Maggie feels Ebling has an excellent shot to become an All
American.
