TIGERS WIN SIX MORE, STRETCH SKEIN TO TWELVE
Our men's varsity basketball team proved why they deserve U.P.I.'s number nine rating
in last week's Division II poll, as they added six more notches to the win column to make
it twelve consecutive wins and a 14-1 overall record. Randolph-Macon lost twice to Vince
Angotti's charges during the six-game stretch, while Loyola College, Frostburg State,
U.M.B.C. , and Point Park College fell prey, too.
In their most recent outing, an 82-79 decision over NAIA-affiliated Point Park, senior
Pat McKinley became Towson State's all-time leading scorer, surpassing Larry Witherspoon's
previous mark of 1,546. Pat's second bucket, with 15:06 remaining in Saturday's opening
half, gave him first place with 1,548. The 6-7 City College grad added 11 more to that and
now has 1,559 with the rest of the season to add to that impressive total. In that contest,
the Tigers led the Pioneers by ten or twelve points most of the way and a late rally made
the score seem closer than it actually was. Junior forward Brian Matthews continues to
lead the squad in scoring, dropping in 20 against Point Park along with 16 rebounds.
What has made the streak even more impressive is that the Tigers have played only four
home games at the Towson Center, and eleven away or at a neutral site. That gives the squad
an amazing 10-1 record away from home, and 4-0 in the Center. At home, Towson topped
Randolph-Macon, 78-76 and Loyola College, 83-61. We then took to the road and whipped Frost¬
burg State, 84-63, U.M.B.C., 78-70, Randolph-Macon again, 76-70, and Point Park. With that
road trip out of the way the Tigers now play eight of the remaining 11 regular season games
at home, giving Towson a decided advantage for the rest of the slate.
"I'm glad we're finally coming back to the Towson Center," coach Angotti said. "I
think it's a credit to our club that they've done so well away from home. That's the sign
of a good team. If they can win better that 50 percent of their road games they're doing
real well."
Salisbury State's Sea Gulls invade the Towson Center tomorrow (Tuesday) night at
8:00 p.m. This is where the thick of the Mason-Dixon schedule begins as Towson faces Mount
St. Mary's and the University of Baltimore over the next two weeks as well as Point Park
and Wheeling College. Following Tuesday's contest with Salisbury, we travel to Emmittsburg
on Friday night to face the Mount, then we host Point Park next Monday, Wheeling College
next Thursday, and arch-rival Baltimore next Saturday.
Along with Matthews and McKinley, who are averaging 18.1 and 15.0 points per game,
respectively, Towson is getting plenty of help from others as well. Junior guard Roger
Dickens is averaging 16.6 points and 5.0 assists per game, and Savia Sharp is hitting at
10.4 points a clip and is playing air-tight defense. Bobby Washington is averaging 8.9
and is only 57 points away from the 1,000 point club. Charles Lawler comes off the bench
and chips in with 4.5 points per game, and guard Rod Norris is averaging 3.6. Pat Britton
is adding depth up front, and Larry Johnson, Michael Dukes, Rich Deerr, and Arthur Coleman
have shown promise coming off the bench. Lloyd Tucker and Don Gettier will improve with
experience. All things considered, the Tigers look mighty tough at this point and it will
take a complete turnaround to keep them from reaching that 20- victory goal for the first
time in Towson history.
