T owson State University Tiger Tracks Published exclusively for Tiger Club members by the News and Publications Services TIGERS FACE ROUGH ROAD AHEAD January 10, 1978 Towson State's men's varsity basketball squad plunges into the most difficult part of its schedule this week beginning Thursday night when we play host to the Randol ph- Macon Yellow Jackets in the Towson Center. Game time is 8:00 P.M. Coach Vince Angotti's Tigers are now 9-2 on the year and 2-0 in the Mason-Dixon Conference following last Saturday night's 86-77 victory over crosstown rival University of Baltimore. The win was our 14th consecutive regular season conference triumph without a loss over the last three seasons. It also marked the fifth time in the last six meet¬ ings that we've been able to sting the Bees. Senior Brian Matthews played his best game of the season in leading us to the win over UB. Brian pumped in 26 points including a spurt of eight straight that helped put us to the lead by a dozen midway in the second half. Senior Roger Dickens chipped in with his usual 17 while junior Larry Johnson and sophomore Lloyd Tucker added 13 and 11 respectively. Prior to the UB win we beat a highly regarded Adelphi University quintet 81-70. It was our first action in 22 days but we came out burning. Dickens enjoyed an incredible night shooting, finishing with 31 points including a 7 for 7 showing at the free throw line. Adelphi came into the game with a 9-2 record. "We've beaten three of the best teams in the New York area with our wins over Bridgeport, Adelphi and C. W. Post," says Angotti. "If we can take New York Tech this Saturday night we will have handled quite a bit of talent." But before the Tigers can get at Tech they'll have to deal with Randol ph-Macon, a squad that survived all the way to the NCAA Division II national championship last year. They closed out their year with a 22-8 record, losing to Tennessee-Chattanooga in the title game. After Randol ph-Macon on Thursday night and New York Tech on Saturday night at the Towson Center we'll host Frostburg State on January 17 and U.M.B.C. on January 19. Those two games will be played at Burdick Hall because of the tennis tournament in the Towson Center. Frostburg always sends a pesky bunch and of course, the Tigers have been waiting to attack U.M.B.C. again ever since the Retrievers handed us a 73-68 loss in the finals of the Metro Tournament in early December. On January 23 we'll travel to Phila¬ delphia Textile, a former national champion, and then return to the Towson Center to host Morgan State. That should be a hum-dinger. TIGER WOMEN HOST A TOURNAMENT Eight women's teams including Towson State, Lock Haven, Slippery Rock, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, American University, Salisbury State, Frostburg and Loyola College will gather in the Towson Center beginning Friday at 1:00 P.M. to compete in the second annual Towson State University Women's Invitational Basketball Tournament. Lock Haven won the title last year with a 69-62 win over Slippery Rock. Federal City finished third followed by Loyola, Towson and Morgan State. First round action in the double elimination affair will see the eight teams playing at 1, 3, 6 and 8 on Friday. Consolations for fifth and sixth place will be played at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday. Third and fourth place will be contested at 1:00 P.M. with the championship to be played at 3:00 P.M. Tickets are $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for stu¬ dents. -over-
