I 1 ( ^ * These reports conveyed to the readers of The Maryland Gazette as much as it must do to this audience a picture of turmoil, confusion, bloodshed and progress toward the Republic. Yet this is only a part of the picture during the early phase of the Revolution. We also read about tranquility and/or the return to it. One is even concerned about new Paris fashions. Anger is, of course, expressed about the King's and the royal family's attempted escape from Paris (June 1791) to Varennes. But within another year we get an impression of harmony between the people of France, the National Assembly and the King when the Constitution is completed and the King endorses it. Messages are being exchanged between Louis XVI and the National Assembly that paint a picture of unity and respect for the rights of people. It appears that after prenatal pains a healthy child is born whose name is "constitutional monarchy." The parents of the child are the National Assembly and King Louis XVI. Both of them receive respect and affection from much of the nation. During an excursion of the royal couple from the Thuilleries to the Champs Elysees without guards people greet them with "Vive le Roi, Vive La Reine ! " ( Sept . 10, 1791)-- Heroes of the hour are such people as Mirabeau and De La Fayette. Mirabeau' s funeral in the middle of April, 1791 draws thousands of people as spectators and mourners, in the composition of its funeral train it reflects unity and harmony. De La Fayette tries to reconcile Assembly, People and King. He serves all of them. A discordant note is struck by the emigrees and their conservative supporters, Austria, Prussia and Russia.
