That's how junior history and sociology major Carmon Brown has spent the last week. The tsunamilike along the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina stunned Brown, an exchange student from Louisiana State University. Her immediate family lives in Baton Rouge, but some of her relatives had to evacuate New Orleans. """"Saturday and Sunday [before the hurricane hit], it was kind of hard to call people"""" because the cellular networks were busy, Brown said. """"I was calling home, calling home, calling home. I finally got in contact with my family and they said they were just going to buckle down and ride it out."""" Her friends at LSU face a """"complete mess"""" on campus, Brown said. """"I'm kind of frustrated that I'm not there, but my family is glad that I'm here in Towson,"""" she said. Though Towson is more than a thousand miles from Louisiana, community members are ramping up their outreach efforts. Several students who have been displaced from colleges and universities along the Gulf Coast have inquired about attending Towson for a semester. """"Through TU's Quick-Admit process, non-degree-seeking displaced students may be admitted and referred immediately for housing considerations,"""" according to a University announcement. On Friday, an impromptu committee met to organize a campus- wide fund-raiser. Vice president for student affairs Deb Moriarty asked assistant vice president for diversity resources Art King to chair the fund-raising effort. """"The students wanted to do something, and they wanted administration support, so we all got together,"""" King said. Student Government Association president Darcy Accardi and University Residence Government president Patrick Dieguez spent the weekend arranging for students to staff donation tables on the beach and outside Newell. """"I figured that the best and most effective way to reach out to the victims was to collaborate and centralize all of our efforts,"""" Dieguez said. Starting Wednesday, students, faculty and staff are invited to donate money to the American Red Cross at eight locations on campus. Student leaders will staff tables on the beach outside Cook Library between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and outside the Newell Den between 4 and 8 p.m. Other locations will have secure boxes for donations. Comedian takes aim at 'Townsen State* Erica Kritt Arts Editor My interview with comedian Zach Galifianakis began like many others: """"What do you know about Towson?"""" There was only one difference: It was in front of more than 100 students in the Potomac Lounge during Galifianakis's performance on Saturday night. """"What do I know about Towson?"""" he said in return. """"Home of the Tigers, one of the worst basketball teams ever,"""" to which he received a roar of applause. After referring to Towson as Townsen State, he was quickly corrected by the audience and then looked in his notebook for his """"witty retort for Towson."""" He tossed some insults at the campus: """"I know that the grand wizard of the KKK went here,"""" he joked. During the impromptu Q&A, Galifianakis used questions as a launching"""" pad to visit odd and ridiculous subjects like Google, Terry Schiavo and President Bush. He told the audience that he went to Towson and majored in the French horn, """"or the Freedom Horn,"""" as he called it. (For the record, he did neither.) While answering the Towson question, he also made fun of fraternities, saying his fraternity motto was """"don't make me use this roof- ie."""" Galifianakis kept the audience in stitches during the hour-long performance, which was held as part of See BEARDED, page 17 INSIDE: i Coming In Thursday's Towerlight-.
