TL20060904-01 "Rachel Frederick Assistant News Editor The remnants of Hurricane Ernesto put a damper on some of the Universitys LaborStay Weekend activities this year. Fridays block party was canceled, Saturdays foot-ball game saw below-average atten-dance, and Sundays Beach Bash attracted fewer students than last year, however Sunday nights com-edy show drew a substantial crowd. About 60 runners turned out for the Xterra Scramble 5K run Friday at 7 p.m. on Burdick Field. We had 114 people registered originally, and because of the rain a lot of people didnt show up, but it was still a good number of people who participated, campus life intern Darcy Accardi said. Because of the weather, the 5K was not run competitively, but as a fun run, she added. The run was supposed to cul-minate with a block party on Pennsylvania Avenue, but inclement weather led to its cancellation. Runners and volunteers were able to celebrate the end of the run with free food and a DJ, however. The Grill and Chill, scheduled for Friday on the University Union Potomac Patio, was also postponed because of the weather. LaborStay continued Saturday when Towsons football team host-ed Morgan State at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The games attendance figure of 4,484 paled in comparison to last years home opener, which attracted 6,527. The weekend continued with music, caricature artists and free food at the Beach Bash on Sunday. The event, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, attracted students throughout the afternoon. I think it could be better dur-ing the week because there would be more people, Michael Alford, a senior dance performance education major, said. Its a good event. It just needs more people. I think because everyone went home this weekend there wasnt a good turnout, Stephen Zerance, a sophomore English and French Sept. 4, 2006 The Towerlight www.thetowerlight.com Published by and for the students of Towson and Baltimore -- twice-weekly Monday INSIDE Calendar.....3 Perspectives.....4 News.....7 Vote.....10 Arts....15 Beyond.....11 Puzzles.....18 Classifi eds.....19 Sports.....24 on the Rain doesnt go away for LaborStay Heidi Greenleaf/The Towerlight More than 1,000 students gathered on Burdick Field Thursday to get pepped for Saturdays opening game against Morgan State. In an interview, Desi said about 100 students are entering the expanded program this fall. Were trying to use the word new cautiously, he said. We dont want students to think this is a brand new program. Do students really want to take an MBA in its first year? Thats why Desi emphasizes the Weekend of activities takes a hit from inclement weather, but students show for Sunday events I think the idea of the get people campus, but no one has been sticking around.
