According to a campus-wide e-mail sent Friday, the search process will remain confidential until a short list of acceptable candidates is identified. The search has been underway since late August, when a search committee comprised of students, faculty, staff and administrators from across campus first met to discuss what qualities and qualifications are critical for the new provost. Maria Fracasso, chairperson of the provost search committee and associ-ate professor for the department of psychology, stressed the importance of community contribution to the search. ""This is a campus-wide activity,"" Fracasso said. ""All campus input is critical for us to make sure we get the best candidate for Towson."" Throughout September, com-mittee members met with students, faculty, staff and administrative groups to gain input from the campus communi-ty. The committee incorporated the comments into a list of qualifications. A job description for mittee has received applications from what they describe as ""very high quality candidates."" Now, the committee will review the applications in order to narrow the list to 10 candidates. The candidates' references will be checked and telephone interviews will be conducted before a final list of candidates is invited to campus for an interview and open forum. The forum, scheduled for mid-November, is intended to give the campus com-munity a chance to meet candi-dates and ask questions. Since the announcements appeared, the corn-ing with the Robert Caret Provost and Academic Affairs for TU by Jan. 1 of next year. Fracasso is confident the deadline will be met. The position will remain open and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. In order to provide the campus with up-to-date information, the Towson homepage is now linked to a Web site about the provost search, www.towson . edu/tu/ p rovostsearch . The site includes a list of committee members, job description and a ques-tionnaire on the qualifications for the position of provost. According to the site, the provost is responsible for the quality of aca-demic programs, faculty and staff. They are accountable for the alloca-tion of resources to support the cur-riculum and academic services and oversee the developmental and budg-etary administration of the University's colleges, student servic-es, academic support services and information technology.
