Col. Bernard Gerst, director of public safety for the Towson University Police Department, said Towson was considerably lucky in the amount of damage done by Thursday evening's storm, which had been downgraded from hurri¬ cane status by the time the brunt of the impact reached Maryland. “When you're talking about [it] in comparison to what happened around the general area, we fared very, very well," Gerst said Friday afternoon. Threats of the impending storm caused classes to be canceled after 12:30 p.m. Thursday and all day Friday. A crisis management team, com¬ posed of University vice presidents, directors and department represen¬ tatives staffed an emergency operat¬ ing center in General Services until 11 a.m. Friday. Gerst explained that Isabel was a good test for the center because this was the first time the University had to employ this crisis management strategy. "I think it went very well, and it was a great opportunity to -test the emergency operating center," he said. "Everybody worked very well together. Everybody pitched in. Mother Nature gave us a real exer¬ cise, it made us test it [a lot sooner] than we wanted to." The most extensive damage on campus was caused by a large oak tree, which fell onto the Glen foot¬ bridge and into the pathway leading to the University Union, Glen Towers and Smith Hall, Gerst said.
