tl19710917-000 "THE AWARD WINNING, PHOTOGRAPHIC TOWSON STATE COLLEGE Vol. XXIV No.2 Towson State College Friday, September 17, 1971 Towson, Maryland 21204 A new Towerlight When those of us who now comprise the Editorial Board of Towerlight held our first chaotic meeting early last spring, we made a co mmatment to ourselves, and to our fellow members of the academic community. A committment to make the major information source of the Towson State College community serve that community as it should, not as it had. We cannot now, nor could we then condemn our f orerunners. They did the job as they saw it, !flaking the best of what they had. They worked na rel, and deserved more praise than they ever received, and to be quite honest, we're pretty Proud of them. What we are not proud of, what we, cannot countenance, is their manner and Objectives. Towerlight served Towerlight, not the students of Towson State. The manifestations of a thawing of this at-titude were evident even before we took over oPerations - writing in a reply to an editorial, one of the distinguished members of the History Department called us ""the new Towerlight"" several months before the present staff took command. While the letter was hardly offered in praise, Dr. Blumberg summed things up for us very well. The paper that you're reading today is a ""new Towerlight "" - a Towerlight committed to avoiding the very mistakes that we've been quite rightly castigated for in the past. A Towerlight committed to keeping this community informed. A Towerlight committed to doing everything in its power to make life at Towson State less of a hassle for the students of this College, and when they share with us a common goal, the faculty and administration as well...while there will be many times that all three of these forces will see the best interests of the community in different lights. Towerlight will attempt to objectively analyze the situation, and offer a viable solution to the difficulty at hand which will be in the best interests of all. There will be many times that we'll knock things here at Towson. We would remind those of you who come under the attack of the editorial pen, that unless we specifically state otherwise, we are not dealing in personalities...we are dealing in issues. An attack on a system is not an attack on the man running the system - no man can operate a poor system with the efficiency that a good system can be operated. This then is ""the new Towerlight"", committed to making Towson State College a more viable framework in which to operate. Our minds are not closed to anyone, student, faculty member, or administrator...talk to us, tell us how you feel. ..if you've got a gripe, tell us, don't sit there and bitch, do something about it. We here at Towerlight have a dream much like the dream of the late Martin Luther King...a dream of unity and progress. Help us make it a reality. Sincerely, The Editorial Board 1971-72 "
