Towson volunteers clean up Gulf
Coast after Katrina catastrophe
Kristi Funderburk
News Editor
Jen Smoker felt helpless when she
heard the stories of Hurricane Katrina
and the devastation it brought to the
Gulf Coast, so when she was offered
an opportunity to help, she didn’t
look for any excuses.
Within three days of getting the
call, she was on her way to Slidell,
La., the southernmost point of land
before New Orleans.
"When the opportunity came, I
thought ‘I’m 25-years-old, I’m avail¬
able, I don’t have anything else going
on.’ There was no reason for me not
to go,” she said.
As a staff member of the Towson
University chapter of Campus
Crusade for Christ, Smoker looked
near and far for help within the
organization. When Smoker left for
Louisiana on Friday, Sept. 9, Towson
junior Lisa Menard joined her.

two-day visit the volunteers worked with the Novell family in Slidell, La.
Of the experience, Smoker said, "Just watching them and their strength to
be able to press on is just incredible." All photos are courtesy of Smoker.
TU preps big
publicity push

In an effort to increase the
University’s exposure in the com¬
munity, Towson is launching a mul¬
timedia public¬
ity campaign,
including a new
television com¬
mercial and a
more user-friend¬
ly Web site.
The com¬
mercial was
shot over the
course of three
days both on
and off campus.
Officials hope
it will convey a “world without
doors” metaphor to complement
President Robert Caret’s vision for
the University.
The marketing push will be
Towson’s first comprehensive effort
in at least five years. The new televi¬
sion spot will begin airing at the
end of September in the Baltimore
metropolitan area and will run for
40 weeks.
"With Dr. Caret here, and a new
perspective on what Towson does,
and what Towson does so well, it
was time to raise
our profile in the
media,” Ellen
Stokes, associate
vice president
for university
marketing, said.
The new mar¬
keting strategies,
however, are not
related to enroll¬
ment growth,
and have “noth¬
ing to do with
recruiting,” Stokes said.
Instead, the University wants to
increase the flow of information
between the neighboring area and
the school.
Advertising on television doesn’t
come cheap. "The media buy for

Campus arrests
Drunk and busted
TUPD cracks down on drinking violations
Brian Stelter
Editor in Chief
In the first two weeks of
September, four Towson students
were arrested by the Towson
University Police Department for
crimes that were committed while
they were intoxicated, according to
the TUPD crime log.
Two female students were arrest¬
ed on separate occasions for drunk
driving, and two male students were
arrested in separate incidents near
the Glen Towers.
At 3:46 a.m. on Sept. 1, a female
was driving a 1996 Mercury Cougar
on Cross Campus Drive when a
police officer became suspicious
of the driver. She was pulled over
on Aigburth Avenue across York
Road from campus, and the offi¬
cer "immediately smelled a strong
odor of alcohol beverage" coming
from the car, according to the police
report.
When the officer asked the stu¬
dent if she had been drinking alco¬
hol, she said no. But once she
stepped out of the vehicle and
couldn’t stand up straight, she
changed her story. After completing
a sobriety test, she was transported
to the local Baltimore County police
precinct, where her blood alcohol
content was measured to be .15,
almost double the legal limit of .08.
