The theme was submitted through a contest held last year, explained 2003 Homecoming chair Kathleen Hertel. ""We thought it was a great idea to have a different decade theme each day,"" Hertel, a senior photography major, said. A semi-formal Homecoming dance Saturday, Oct. 4, kicked off the week's events with music, food, and prizes. Students involved with cam-pus activities were nominated for this year's Royalty Court, which was announced at the dance. Nominees include Clinton Jackson, Zach Gutin, Hap Durr, Ryan Eakin, Benny Feehley, Joe Webb, Julie Gehring, Hara Henshell, Christine Caruso, Chrissy Heijh, Rebecca Dupas and Stephanie Shapiro. Homecoming king and queen will be announced during half-time at Saturday's game. Sunday, 17 teams including mem-bers from Greek organizations, SGA and intramural teams, faced off in a Powderpuff football game on Burdick Field. She Devils, an ultimate Frisbee team, took first place in the event. Hertel said she enjoys the competi-tion of the game the most. ""Mainly, it's a nice change because it's the girls who are playing football this time and the guys who are in the cheerleading suits,"" she said. Ian Campbell, a Powderpuff cheer-leader, supported the girls in Sunday's games. In a yellow, red and white cheer-leading outfit, Campbell said wearing the skirt for once, ""felt awesome."" In order to promote participation in the week of festivities, prizes are offered for the student groups earn-ing the most points for participation and success in events. Tuesday's events began with T-shirt tie-dying next to the fishpond outside of the University Union. Nicole Williams, a junior deaf studies and Spanish major, tie-dyed a shirt while a DJ blasted hip hop near-by. Celebrating school spirit was fun, she said, but very messy. ""If you've never tie-dyed before, it's kind of confusing,"" she said. More than 700 students spent Tuesday evening in Paws watching and participating in ""Say What Karaoke."" SGA members performed ""Proud Mary,"" and other highlights included ""A Whole New World"" by TKE, ""It Wasn't Me"" by Sigma Phi and ""Heaven is a Place on Earth"" by Zeta and Delta Sigma. At the end of the night, Lambda Chi Alpha's Frank Sinatra rendition took home the first place trophy. Freshman mass communication major Tonia Kallon watched the per-formances and said she thought the event was OK. ""This is my first Homecoming here,"" Kallon said. ""I thought it would be interesting, like the 'Say What Karaoke' I saw on MTV."" This week students, faculty and staff transformed their rooms and offices into the decade of their choice for Spirit Day Decorating. Judging took. place Tuesday afternoon, with prizes given for the best decorations. Beaded curtains hanging from the entrance to Paws Tuesday afternoon marked the Spirit Day Social, which took students back to the 60s with free ice cream sundaes, mocktails, giveaways and face painting. Student organizations showed their artistic side Tuesday evening during Chalk the Walk, a school pride competition during which groups decorated sections of the sidewalk surrounding the Beach with chalk designs embodying the ""Blast from the Past"" theme.
