Robert L. Ehrlich speaks to professor Richard Vatz's mass communication classes every semester. Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. made his biannual visit to professor Richard Vatz's persuasion class Tuesday afternoon to discuss with students the importance of critical thinking when addressing the media. Ehrlich came prepared with examples highlighting """"flawed media coverage,"""" including articles from the Baltimore Sun and The Washington Post. Flanked by more than a half dozen aides and security guards, the governor addressed a full crowd of students, reporters and professors in Van Bokkelen Hall. """"Think critically,"""" Ehrlich said. """"Do not take things as they appear to be."""" Students and faculty engaged the governor with questions about """"flawed media"""" and a variety of political positions. Ehrlich said that while opinions should remain in the editorial portion of a newspaper, they sometimes infiltrate the news sections. """"Look at the relationship between fact and fiction, opinion and fact; look at the difference between the headline and the story,"""" he said. University officials are also considering offers from developers to place students in off- campus housing arrangements. ? """"We need to make some decisions rather quickly,"""" President Robert Caret said. The University could release new Requests for Proposals for housing in early 2006, with the goal of having new beds online by Fall 2008, if not before. TU may enroll 800 additional students next fall, based on recommendations from the University System of Maryland. But the campus has reached its housing capacity; dozens of freshmen were placed in temporary triples this fall. If Towson adds 800 students to its head- count, some of these students will request housing. USM vice chancellor for administration and finance Joseph Vivona said the board recognizes Towson's status as a growth institution. """"We fully understand, at our end, that that means more beds,"""" Vivona said. """"It is not a commuter school exclusively, it has a high residential need."""" Whether playing Lester Bangs in """"Almost Famous"""" or Scottie J in """"Boogie Nights,"""" Hoffman is one of the most prolific character actors working in film today. But with """"Capote,"""" where he portrays famed eccentric writer Truman Capote, it appears Hoffman may break out of the """"supporting actor"""" constraints and become a bona fide leading man. Come year end, he will almost certainly be a household name, and many prognosticators have already labeled him a favorite to win next year's Best Actor Oscar. Working with the most iconic filmmakers of our time, Hoffman has turned in memorable roles in films directed by the Coen Brothers (""""The Big Lebowski""""), Todd Solondz (""""Happiness""""), Spike Lee (""""25th Hour"""") and Cameron Crowe (""""Almost Famous""""). But the actor may be most synonymous with the parts he's played in the films of longtime friend Paul Thomas Anderson (""""Boogie Nights,"""" """"Magnolia,"""" """"Punch-Drunk Love""""). Though it's their working relationship that has won them fans, Hoffman places the emphasis on their friendship. """"I'm sure I'll work with Paul again-I've been in all of his mov- ies-and we're very good friends, so working on a film together is sort of secondary,"""" he said.
