Is it possible to climb to the top relying solely on deception and persuasion? The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, ""How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying"" has been answering these questions with farcical wit and vigorous charisma since 1961. Beginning tonight, Towson University's theatre arts depart-ment, in collaboration with the music and dance departments, will present an updated version of this Broadway comedy in the Center for the Arts Mainstage Theatre. ""How to Succeed..."" chroni-cles the business career of J. Pierrpoint Finch, who makes a dramatic leap from window washer to top executive through an elaborate series of cunning schemes, charismatic lies and charming coincidences. Auditions took place last spring, and the cast of 27 stu-dents began the rigorous rehearsal process over the sum-mer. ""Because the time commit-ment is so great, we had to re-audition certain parts, early in the fall,"" director Diane- Smith- Sadak said. This is Smith-Sadak's first time directing .a musical for Towson, which she said gave her the opportunity to work with an interesting cast. - ""A musical draws a different type of actor,"" Smith-Sadak said. ""We begin with actors who have little musical training and singers who have little acting experience, but this is an excit-ing collaboration."" Junior theater major Christos Marcile, who plays Finch, had no previous vocal training before rehearsals and has never appeared in a Towson musical. Under the direction of musi-cal director Dr. Phillip Collister, however, Marcile said singing has become second nature to him. ""I have found the training very constructive,"" he said. ""I can sing notes I never thought possible in my range."" Marcile recreates the role of Finch, made famous by Matthew Broderick in the 1995 revival.
