Josh Dombroskie Contributing Writer Three weeks before Election Day, Rep. Ben Cardin (D-Md) vis-ited campus Wednesday morning to discuss foreign policy and his stance against the war in Iraq. Cardin, who spoke in University Union Chesapeake I, was invited by TUs College Democrats. Im interested in hearing the Democratic response to foreign policy and more specifically what Ben Cardin thinks should be done with the situation in Iraq, Janet Witherspoon, a senior American studies major, said. Cardin is running against Lt. Gov. Michael Steele in the Nov. 7 general election. Both men are trying to win the Senate seat of Sen. Paul Sarbanes, who is not running for re-election. Im hoping to get another point of view from the Cardin speech, Louis Pope, a junior political science major, said. Im a Steele fan, but I wanted to hear what Cardin had to say. Cardin described the differenc-es between Steele and himself, alleging that Steele has not taken a solid stand on any particular issue in his campaign. I disagreed with George Bushs foreign policy, Cardin said. Michael Steele believed it was right to go into Iraq and believes in continuing that poli-cy. I disagree with that. Cardin also referenced the $230 billion spent on the Iraq war, which he said is 10 times the amount needed to fully fund the No Child Left Behind educa-tion act. Cardin is the ranking member of the House of Representatives Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, and he spoke about renewing Americas relationship with the interna-tional community, a relationship that has been clouded by the war in Iraq. We need a new direction in Jazzmen Tynes Assistant News Editor Many students dismiss the Daily Digest. Instead, they read the messages about their new friend request on Facebook or their new photo comment on MySpace. But Rebecca Showunmi reads the Digest, and by doing so was able to find an internship registering students with Maryland Votes. Maryland Votes is a statewide initiative to register and mobilize college voters and since May, interns and volunteers have reached out to college campuses across the state. They aim to educate and register col-lege students for the Nov. 7 election. One day, I was reading the Daily Digest and I noticed something about political science and a three credit internship, the junior criminal justice major said. I had just added political science as my minor, so I decided to take on the internship. Thanks to recent registration initiatives 2,054 Towson students are now registered to vote. Greek life, Housing and Residence Life, and College Democrats were among the groups participating. The University has provided the centers with oversight, access to new equipment, and the expertise of health professions faculty and students. In exchange, the col-lege has been able to place students at the centers for internships and credit.
