Global Get Down Sharon Leff Editor in Chief Towson freshman Kevin Ryan was pronounced brain dead this weekend after being struck by at least one vehicle while walking near Goucher and Loch Raven Boulevards early Friday morning. Kevins father, Charlie Ryan, said according to the police report the driver that hit Kevin was intoxicated. A second driver struck Kevin and then stopped to call 911, family friend Steve Zurier said. According to Deb Moriarty, vice president for student affairs, Kevin was walking back to campus. Charlie Ryan said Kevin remains in critical condition. His organs are being donated to other patients in need. That decision [to donate] was Kevins. When he con-verted his license from a provisional license to a regular license he checked organ donor, Charlie Ryan said. That was unbeknownst to us. Kevins friend Andy Yare said he and Kevin, along with some other friends, were hanging out at the Donnybrook Apartment complex Thursday night. He left after we did and then he somehow ended up at Target and he called another one of our friends to get back, and thats when he was hit, Yare said. Kevin lived in the Residence Tower and went to Atholton High School in Columbia, Md. He was studying business at Towson. [Baltimore County Police] have arrested a 25-year-old male. Hes in jail and hell probably face 12 serious charges, and they are slowly, methodically working to build their case, Charlie Ryan said. I dont feel bitter-ness to that person. His punishment will be his guilt that he killed someone. He said he finds solace in donating Kevins organs and that a small piece of Kevin will live on in future genera-tions. Kevin was taken to Sinai Hospital. A social worker contacted the Towson University Police Department, who contacted Housing and Residence Life. Moriarty said after a student dies the University con-tacts the students professors and his roommate. Charlie Ryan said he and his wife will be starting a scholarship in Kevins memory. I dont want any flowers. Theyre going to dry up and whither away, he said. The scholarship will be promoted on a Web site: kev-insgift. org. Kevins Gift will embrace the donor program and promote it on the Web page as an avenue for people to give, he said.
