The 12,750 sq. ft. addition will be built on the existing roof and extend out to the southeast cor-ner of the building. Construction will begin in a few weeks and is slated for com-pletion in May 2002. Jack Nye, director of planning for facilities management, said construction will cause few dis-ruptions at Burdick. Parking will not be affected because the fencing around the site will be contained to the grassy area surrounding the building. Several faculty members have been relocated due to the con-struction. However, Deborah Greener, associate professor in the department of nursing, said she does not anticipate any compli-cations from the construction and sees additional student facilities as a positive change. ""It will also be a good recruit-ment tool for incoming stu-dents,"" Greener said. ""Anything that is beneficial to students in terms of their quality of life on campus, especially with recre-ation, is great."" The new fitness center will replace the current weight room in the balcony of the first gym, which many students say is often hot and overcrowded. ""It's very, very small for the population it's supposed to serve,"" Nye said. ""It's a mezza-nine in an un-air-conditioned facility, so you can imagine how Towson opens strong, finishes fourth Saul Stoogenka The Towerlight Junior Nitin Deodhar won in three sets over Lee Kennedy of Johns Hopkins during the TU Invitational Friday. Also it's a little crowded for the equip-ment we have, so that's a big limitation as well."" Justin Stiebel, a sophomore psychology and deaf studies major, said he works out in Burdick Hall several times a week and would welcome better facilities. ""There are too many machines in too crowded an area. My high school had a bet-ter gym,"" he said. ""I'd like to see a new facility that resembles the athlete's gym over in Towson Center."" The new fitness center will have two levels and be about four to five times larger than the existing weight room. ""The second level fitness center will overlook the downstairs fitness center on one side and the wall and the lounge on the other side."" Beth Dishner assoc. director, rec. services Beth Dishner, associate direc-tor of campus recreation servic-es, said the upper level will have mostly cardio equipment, including elliptical cross train-ers, treadmills, stair climbers, bicycles and possibly a small section with spinning bikes. Televisions will be mounted in this area too so that people can watch them while they work out. The weight machines will be downstairs, along with some additional cardio equipment for people who want to warm up before lifting. ""The second level fitness cen-ter will overlook the downstairs fitness center on one side and the wall and the lounge on the other side. So you could be up riding a bike and watch people climb pretty much at eye level,"" Dishner said.
