James Sheehan, currently the vice president for finance and administration at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, will assume the position on Jan. 4, 2006. President Robert Caret announced the appointment in an e-mail to faculty and staff on Friday afternoon. """"The thing that finally sold me is [what Sheehan's] president said to me: 'He's the best hire I've ever made,'"""" Caret said in an interview. Sheehan has served as an administrator at four higher education institutions. """"He has done it all - done it all at schools that are similar to us, though smaller. But I think he'll have no problem jumping up to...a larger campus,"""" Caret said. Edinboro enrolls about 8,000 students, less than half of Towson's 18,000. Sheehan has worked at Edinboro since 1998. William Coleman, the associate vice president for facilities at Edinboro, praised Sheehan's leadership. """"I appreciate James, because it's been my experience that he will stand up for his people,"""" Coleman said. """"I have seen him step up to the plate."""" Coleman said Sheehan strengthened Edinboro's fiscal position See NEW, page 9 Published by and for the students of Towson and Baltimore -- twice weekly Monday, 10/10/05 Chemicals spark fire in Smith Brian Stelter Editor in Chief Dozens of firefighters and several hazardous materials crews responded to a fire in a Smith Hall chemical laboratory on Sunday morning. A preliminary investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire was caused by the reaction of heat producing chemicals inside a cabinet in Room 549. The doors of the cabinet were apparently blown open. The building's sprinkler system stopped the fire from spreading to adjacent rooms, but 20 to 30 rooms on the fifth, fourth and third floors were affected by water. Many of the rooms are faculty offices and storage areas. Towson University Police Department Col. Bernie Gerst, director of public safety, said officers responded to a water flow alarm around 9:30 a.m. """"When the police responded, they observed smoke in the room,"""" Gerst said. """"The fire department was summoned to the scene."""" At least 20 emergency vehi cles responded, including many Baltimore County Fire Department units. Volunteer fire departments from Lutherville, Parkville, and Jacksonville, and members of Towson's Department of Environmental Health and Safety were on site as well.
