Stephen Murphy spent 27 years with University Police after leaving Towson during his junior year Martin Schneider The Towerlight When Stephen Murphy start-ed with the University Police in 1972, officers drove around in beat-up AMC Hornets and used car alarms as police sirens. Although the force has come a long way since then, Murphy said one of his crowning moments is still getting rid of ""those tiny, ugly little things."" ""The troops and I were so happy just to have a real car. You don't know what it was like driving around in those Hornets,"" he said. After 15 years of accomplish-ments as University Police Chief � including the purchase of a brand new Chevrolet Caprice Classic in 1989 � Murphy has decided to retire effective Wednesday. During his tenure as chief, the department has grown to 42 sworn officers and initiated new programs including the police cadet program in 1988 and a training program utilized by law enforcement agencies across the state. But Murphy said almost as important as the years of law enforcement work is the one accomplishment that got away. ""It's to my personal regret even after all these years that I didn't finish my degree at Towson,"" he said. ""It's one of the biggest regrets that I've had to live with for the past 30 years."" Tigers continue local success in win Cason's 16 leads Towson to victory over Morgan State DJ Gabo The Towerlight Following a split in the Battle of Baltimore Classic, Towson upped its record to 2-1 with a 67-59 non-league victory at Morgan State Tuesday. It was the first time the team won back-to-back games on the road since 1996. The Tigers picked up where they left off in their tournament consolation win against Coppin State by utilizing a balanced scoring attack in downing the Bears (0-2). Junior forward Brian Barber and senior guard Damon Cason led the Tigers with 16 points each, but the whole team need-ed to pitch in after a 10-point Towson lead turned into a three point deficit with 16:05 left in the game. Backup center Mike Shin and reserve forward Kerry Augustus each hit big shots down the stretch to help Towson hold on for the victory. With the score tied 52-52 after a Morgan State run, Augustus hit a jumper that gave the Tigers the lead for good with 6:16 remaining. Senior forward Torin Ragin, playing heavy minutes again on his surgically repaired shins, took the Tigers the rest of the way.
