Inside the boardroom, Towson's presidential search committee meets to plan its next step. ""We're done with round one talking with the 10 candidates,"" Chair James Clements said after the meeting. ""Now we're at round two. But the question becomes: What does round two look like?"" Round two appears to be a more open process than the one that pro-duced former president Mark Perkins. Twenty-five members of the Towson community, including two faculty members from each of TU's eight colleges, have been invit-ed to probe finalists, Clements said. However, there will be no open forums that the entire campus com-munity can attend. On Monday, the SGA passed a resolution expressing its preference fo-r an ""open-modified"" presidential search, allowing as Clements says, ""visible leaders on campus"" to meet with finalists. These individu-als include Charlotte Exner, dean of the College of Health Professions, and Camille Clay, assis-tant vice president for the Office of Diversity Resources, among others throughout campus. ""This will be an open forum,"" Clements said, noting that approxi-mately 50 people (committee mem-bers and invited guests) will meet with finalists. Clements said the committee felt nearly half of the candidates inter-viewed last month were not the right people for the job. File photo San Jose State University President Bob Caret, who served as provost at Towson in the early '90s, is widely speculated by faculty, staff and administrators to be one of five or six finalists for the position of TU president. ""There were some that we felt didn't fit right; that they didn't have enough experience,"" he said. It has been widely speculated among faculty, staff and administra-tors that one of those finalists is for-mer Towson provost Bob Caret, who now serves as president of San Jose State University in California. Caret did not return phone calls made regarding the matter. Former presi-dent Hoke Smith said Caret's name was mentioned as a finalist in the search to replace him, and that word is spreading that Caret is again a possible candi-date. ""He's a very energetic and hard working individual."" USM Regent David Nevins, a 1975 Towson graduate who is on the search committee, left yester-day's meeting early.
