MadEye Moody makes latest addition to Hogwarts faculty in dark, exciting 'Goblet of Fire' Chicken, biscuits and a side of robbery News, page 7 Published by and for the students of Towson and Baltimore -- twice weekly Thursday, 11/17/05 No suspenders required Jaleel White left his Urkel trademarks at home when he spoke to Towson students about life in 'Family Matters' TVfishhowl Erica Kritt Arts Editor By uttering just two words, Jaleel White had the audience out of their seats and busting with laughter. Urkel Dance. Lindsay Ebner/ The Towerlight Jaleel White of """"Family Matters"""" fame spoke with a standing- room only crowd of students in the Chesapeake Rooms Tuesday. White talked about his experience in front of and behind the camera, along with life after the show and ventures he is currently pursuing. Before he concluded his show, White invited one student on stage to do the Urkel dance. Calling one lucky attendee on stage to get down Urkel style, pulling up his pants and getting down, White ended the show on a high note. For most of the show's duration, he spoke about life behind the scenes of """"Family Matters."""" """"It's kinda like I took my life story and I add a lot of the business principles I learned at a very young age that are applicable to college students entering the job world,"""" White said in an interview before the event. Bringing White to Towson was Campus Activities Board lectures chair Monica April's idea, CAB director Cody Dodson said. The idea was a popular one, as students filled 600 seats in the University Union's three Chesapeake Rooms. Several dozen students stood in the back of the room. """"We actually had to turn some people away because of fire codes,"""" Dodson said. Rather than basing his lecture solely on the character of Steve Urkel and his quirks, White told another side of the story. . """"I just like to broaden the scope of it, so that people can understand some of the things going on at the time and really get a business handle on the impact of the show,"""" he said. He doesn't mind talking about the show. After all, """"it's what's taken good care of me,"""" he said. White said he usually doesn't speak to colleges. A talent agency approached White's manager with the idea. See URKEL, page 20 TU sets sights on transfer students Kristi Funderburk News Editor In future enrollment cycles, Towson University is planning to partner with local community colleges and increase the numbers of transfer students. The strategy is part of a statewide effort to create stronger relationships between community colleges and four-year higher education institutions, Provost James Brennan said. Towson intends to improve its ties with five community colleges. The institutions already funnel many students to Towson, but administrators hope tp make the transition smoother. The colleges include ones in Baltimore City, Howard County and Frederick County. """"That doesn't mean we're not talking to others. We already have a number of programs that have articulation agreements,"""" Brennan said. """"At Towson, with our enrollment growth, it's hard for us to handle enrollment growth on campus. [The University] is supposed to go to 25,000, but the campus is built for 21,000."""" The University's enrollment topped 18,000 this fall. The enrollment mix is currently roughly 40-40- 20, meaning 40 percent freshmen, 40 percent transfers and 20 percent graduates. But expanding the freshmen population is difficult, because of housing challenges. In his Academic Convocation in October, Brennan said the University's """"longer term reality"""" is a 20-60-20 distribution, emphasizing transfer students.
