Rather than walking to campus or driving to a parking garage, they can catch the University's black route shuttle bus. The service expansion marks the first time the shuttles have picked up and dropped off students at an off-campus apartment complex. University officials have also purchased buses for a new route to the apartments along Kenilworth Drive. That service may launch in the spring semester. Parking director Pam Mooney estimated that over 600 Towson students live in the Village. The apartment complex is located across the street from campus on the grounds of the Sheppard Pratt Health System. Some of the parking issues on campus are directed toward students living in the Village that drive to class. """"From a parking standpoint, hopefully they will leave their cars there and just take the bus,"""" Mooney said. Towson and the Village started talking about the shuttle over the summer. Construction 'calming' traffic New walkways on Cross Campus Drive meant to slow traffic, improve pedestrian crossing Sharon Leff Associate News Editor Cross Campus Drive sometimes resembles a game of Frogger, as students dodge and duck traffic between the Center for the Arts and University Union. But a new construction project hopes to slow traffic and improve pedestrian crossings by installing """"calmings"""" in the center of the road. The Cross Campus Drive Pedestrian Walkways Project commenced two weeks ago. Towson University coordinated with Baltimore County to design the calmings, which are being added to force drivers to slow down. The University is in charge of the construction, which has occasionally backed up traffic near the There's no reduction in traffic pattern or flow from what was previously there. David Mayhew director, facilities management Union Garage. """"Baltimore County develops the drawings because it's their roads, but we do have to pay for it,"""" David Mayhew, director of facilities management, architecture, engineering and construction, said. Because the University does not own Cross Campus Drive, Baltimore County collaborated during the planning phases of the project. The medians had to be constructed to their standards. """"We approached them early in our project, and showed them our project, and discussed ways to improve pedestrian walkways,"""" Mayhew said. The $54,000 project cost was incorporated into the Center for the Arts' renovation plans. In the last three years, private security guards have been hired and community center desks have been staffed around the clock. By next fall, all building entrances will be accessible with the swipe of a OneCard, replacing the current key- based system. And by Fall 2007, alarms may be added to side doors. Some students believe the doors, labeled exit- only, are a weak point in security. Residents sometimes prop the doors open and allow friends to enter without signing in at the front desk. See SECURITY, page 10 Robbery Update On Monday, Nov. 7, two suspects forced their way into a Tower A resident's dorm room. The victim was held at gunpoint while the suspects rummaged through the victim's roommate's belonging's, leaving with $300 belonging to the victim's roommate. On Sunday evening the TUPD informed The Towerlight that no arrests have been made in the case.
