At the old Hammerjacks, Deville was not only a familiar face to frequent visitors, but also a bartender at the club and partly responsible for bringing hair bands like Poison and Ratt to Baltimore. As she sat behind the bar as the new Hammerjacks chris-tened its new digs Friday night, an odd sense of nostalgia came over her as she saw friends and co-workers from the old club for the first time in years. She greet-ed each with a friendly, ""Hey, stranger."" ""We have,to keep up with the times,"" said Deville, who worked at the old bar/club on South Howard Street for eight years. ""If I wasn't here when the doors opened I would have been devastated."" In the 1980s, the club was a standard tour stop for rock bands like Poison, Danzig, Skid Row, and Extreme. It was the place Baltimore hard rock fans went to hang out. But with the re-opening in 2000 in a much different build-ing a few miles away near the Power Plant, it might not be the place they want to hang out today. ""There was a band there the one time I went. It was more bar-ish than club-ish then,"" jun-ior business administration major Jennifer Ross said. ""I don't think they should have closed it and then reopened it as Hammerjacks just to be a dance club."" But owner Louie Principio thinks he made the right move. After all, Hammerjacks was always a dance club DJs are just what's popular now. Bush braced for what could be a drawn out legal faceoff in Florida as one of the state's 67 counties early yesterday ordered the labor-intensive manual vote recount sought by the Democrats. A federal judge in Miami set a hearing for Monday on a law-suit filed by the Republicans seeking to block a by-hand recount in the state's improba-bly close vote. Bush holds a narrow lead over his Democratic rival after an unofficial recount, with an unknown number of overseas ballots yet to be tallied. , The stakes are high: Whichever man takes the state stands to gain an electoral col-lege majority and become the nation's next president. Bush's campaign moved Saturday to block Gore's efforts to manually recount the vote in Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Volusia counties four counties that gave Gore some of the biggest margins in Florida. However early Sunday, coun-ty officials in West Palm Beach ordered a countywide manual recount of more than 425,000 votes cast. The Democratic stronghold has been at the cen-ter of the battle over the election. ""The Gore campaign is calling for yet another recount in selec-tive and predominantly Democratic counties where there were unexplained large vote swings in their favor in the recount,"" said James A. Baker III, a former secretary of state. who is representing Bush in the Florida matter. Democrats called on the Bush camp to withdraw their suit. ""The hand count can be com-pleted expeditiously and it should be,"" said former Secretary of State Warren Christopher, speaking on Gore's behalf. He noted that Bush, as governor of Texas, had signed legislation in 1997 specifying See ELECTION, page 4 Today High 56 Low 43 Tuesday High 55 Low 31 Wednesday High 48 Low 29 Thursday High 52 Low 34 "
