Community gathers to install Towson's 12th president in ceremony; focus shifts to future Cailin McGough The Towerlight Robert Caret officially became Towson University's twelfth presi-dent in an installation ceremony Friday in the Towson Center. State and local representatives joined faculty, staff, students and community members to honor Caret in a minimalist ceremony marked by relatively short speeches and humor. Before installing Caret, University System of Maryland Chancellor William Kirwan was joined by USM Regents David Nevins and Patricia Florestano in presenting the University medallion to Caret as a symbol of the office. ""Mr. Grand Marshall please pres-ent the University medallion for the investiture... No snickers please,"" Nevins said to laughter and applause. Kirwan charged Caret with the holding the interests of Towson as his highest professional calling and personal responsibility. ""I charge you to bring all of your talents and energy to bear toward strengthening Towson's academic programs, especially in the areas of great need in the state of Maryland and this region, and to vigor-ously advocate for its students, who have placed their trust in this institution,"" Kirwan said. Kirwan said he took an uncommon pleasure in the installation because of his long relationship with Caret. The pair having served as provosts at University of Maryland College Park and Towson, respectively. Caret is precisely the right leader for Towson at this time, Kirwan said. ""While it would take an authority higher than mine to declare this a marriage made in heaven, I can reveal authoritatively that through our intense and constant e-mail contact over the period, this union most def-initely was consummated in cyber-space,"" he said ""In 2053, teamwork, experiential learning and multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving are all part of the norm."" President Robert Caret Following Kirwan's speech, Caret called the day a milestone in the evolution of the University. He illustrated the evolution by sharing the sto-ries of two stu-dents. The first, Larry, was Caret's first research stu-dent in 1974. Initially unsure of his future as an undergraduate, Larry became ""hooked on science"" and went on to obtain a medical degree and work with Native Americans in Arizona. -""For Larry, Towson University was the place where his life took on new possibilities... That's the impact we have as facul-ty and staff members to take our stu-dents to another level of possibility,"" he said. Caret then introduced a hypotheti-cal student, ""Marie,"" attending Towson in 2053. Marie, leaning toward becoming a ""biochemical ethicist,"" takes a class on human cloning and ethics, and visits a learning pod where a faculty guide will help her team solve the multidisciplinary research question of the day, Caret said. ""In 2053, teamwork, experiential learning and multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving are all part of the norm,"" he said. Higher education in 50 years is being determined by forces affecting the University today, such as unprecedented enrollment growth, eroding state support and the expanding role of technology, he said. ""Today we are creating the envi-ronment, academic, practical and social in which Marie will learn. The decisions we make and the changes we make will create the Towson of 50 years from now,"" he See PRESIDENT, page 8 Today High 58 Low 37 Tuesday High 62 Low 50 Wednesday High 64 Low 44 Thursday High 54 Low 31 Friday High 50 Low 37 "
