Caret will meet with numerous University organizations on Towson's campus this weekend as he prepares to assume the school presidency in less than two months. Caret, who takes office July 1, will be on cam-pus tomorrow to meet with individuals on his immediate staff and to hold meetings on campus, administrative assistant to the president Marilyn Demmenfelser said. ""It's a random group of people that he has asked us to schedule meetings with,"" she said. Caret was announced as the University's 12th president at a press conference April 2. He visited the Baltimore area last November for an unan-nounced meeting with TU's presidential search committee and campus leaders. This weekend marks Caret's first visit to Towson since his introduction as the University's next president. ""On these monthly trips, I am largely meeting with my direct reports and other groups and boards to develop the knowledge base I will need when I assume the office in July,"" Caret said from his office at San Jose State University, where he currently serves as president. Though Caret said he will meet with various deans and faculty this weekend, it will also be an opportunity for him to reconnect with acquain-tances in the area, Demmenfelser said. Regent David Nevins said he is hoping to ""grab dinner"" with Caret and University System of Maryland Chancellor William Kirwan, although no official business will be discussed. ""It's an opportunity for Dr. Caret to get to know Kirwan a little better,"" said Nevins, a 1975 gradu-ate of Towson. ""I'm sure we'll talk about some issues facing the System. [Kirwan] has a chance on a regular basis to talk with the Regents and other presidents. Given Caret doesn't start until July 1, his opportunity has been much more lim-ited."" Kirwan said he has known Caret for a ""long time,"" initially as a provost at TU when Kirwan was a provost at University of Maryland, College Park. ""He and I will certainly be talking about the budget situation and how we plan to address it,"" Kirwan said. ""But he's a very experienced presi-dent. He was at [San Jose State University] for eight years, and he had budget problems out there as well."" Both Kirwan and Nevins said they are confi-dent in Caret's ability to lead the University. Nevins said his advice for Caret is to be aggres-sive and passionate about promoting Towson University to all who will listen. ""So many of his strengths will serve Towson very well at this particular time,"" Kirwan said.
