Colleagues, friends gather to remember accomplishments of former TU president Brian Stelter The Tawerlight At a campus memorial service celebrating President Emeritus Hoke Smith's 25-year association with the University, professor Richard Vatz summarized the Smith's presidency in one sentence. """"Hoke Smith was the perfect president,"""" Vatz said. Colleagues commemorated Smith's accomplishments Tuesday afternoon in the Stephens Hall Theatre. Smith passed away of complications from liver cancer March 27 at the age of 72. The memorial service was an opportunity for the campus to pay respects and share memories of the University's 10th president. Former colleagues spoke in tribute to Smith before an audience of 200 people. H. Mebane Turner, the president emeritus of the University of Baltimore, summed up all the speeches. """"A lot of good things were said [at the funeral], and a lot of good things will be said today,"""" he said. """"What I can truthfully witness to is that they're all true."""" With surveys, forums and outreach methods, the task force, which was formed by President Robert Caret in March, plans to take a comprehensive look at the University climate and develop future plans for diversity programs atTU. Veril Phillips, interim vice president for student affairs, heads the task force. """"President Caret is very dedicated to diversity,"""" Phillips said. """"He is very concerned about the student experience on campus - it's an important initiative for him."""" According to Phillips, the committee had received approximately 300 surveys at the end of last week, but he hopes to eventually get 400 total for a more comprehensive look at the campus community.
