DSB, who won Towson's spring Battle of the Bands, played many of the songs from their latest demo and ""Lately,"" which was featured solely on the Internet. Guitarist Chris Hubbard said he was very pleased with the turnout of the crowd, especially since the audi-ence was almost double the size of gigs at other universities. ""We played at Salisbury University the last two years and this year we had more people show up than both years combined at Salisbury,"" Hubbard said. He said he enjoys playing outdoors as opposed to an indoor concert, but both options have positive sides. ""People are mostly just sitting down on blankets, not too many of them are standing up,"" Hubbard said of outside venues. But there's a huge stage you can run around on."" Davis Street Band also broke out the jump kicks Saturday, a move inspired by former Van Haien lead singer David Lee Roth. ""We've been working very hard on our jump kicks,"" Hubbard said. ""We 're trying to perfect them."" Katie Smith The Towerlight Hip-hop artists The Roots take the stage Saturday at TigerFest 2002. Lisa Johnson The Towerlight Junior Chris Capano slides down the ""Wave of Fire"" during Saturday's TigerFest. Other activities offered included a Gladiator Joust and Bouncy Boxing. To read student opinions about the fesival, see story, page 7. But Hubbard admitted that the jump kicks aren't so much paying tribute to the former 80s rock star, as they are about flirtations with the female audience. ""It's all for the ladies,"" Hubbard said. ""Our popularity just skyrocket-ed when we did jump kicks. We'll do whatever it takes, be it jump kicks or back flips."" But the afternoon's excitement didn't really pick up until headlining hip-hop group The Roots took the stage around 4 p.m. Encouraging lots of audience par-ticipation, The Roots presented a typ-ical hip-hop concert, asking the audi-ence to ""wave their hands in the air"" and repeat rhyming phrases. The group even displayed a freaky side Saturday as they caught the audience off guard with a deceiving phrase: ""I like it, I love it, I swallow it."" Waltman said, although she was skeptical about the Campus Activities Board's choice to book The Roots at first, she was surprisingly pleased with the band's performance. ""It was a good concert,"" Waltman said. ""At first I was disappointed, but it turned out to be great.""
