Just two weeks into the fall semester, Tu found itself in the midst of a national crisis, causing classes to be canceled, counseling center hours to be extended, and students to flee the campus to be with their loved ones. While most were glued to their television sets and cell phones, some returned to their homes upon hearing of the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania, resulting in area traffic jams. Former University President Mark L. Perkins called the attacks a ""great learning moment"" for Towson, while students said it was a day they'll remember for the rest of their lives. Some students held candlelight vigils and hung American flags in the weeks that followed the attacks, while others wrote controversial messages in chalk throughout cam-pus, including the phrase: ""U.S. sponsors terrorism too."" In late September an anti-war protest was held on The Beach, resulting in heated debates and vio-lent confrontations between stu-dents. The Towson University Police Department ended the demonstration, citing that organiz-ers of the protest had not obtained a permit for the event. Parking woes continue throughout year When commuter students arrived on campus earlier this year, they noticed a lack of about 300 parking spaces, which had been sacrificed due to construction. Students were greeted with the same situation at the start of this semester, with even more spaces being used as construction projects entered their final phases.
