tl19740510-007 "Page 8 Towerlight, Towson State College May 10, 1974 Ebony News by Francis Clay Michael Grant, Director of the Black Student Union Tutorial Program, confirms that as long as there is a need, the program will continue to exist and grow. He reports: ""I think that the B.S.U. Tutorial Program is the most worthwhile and progressive activity on campus. As proof of this statement, look back te three years ago to the time when the program originated. At this time, there were approximately fifteen students and about ten tutors. The facility that was used for the program was the old Day Care Center in Towson. The tutors walked up to the Day Care Center every Tuesday and Thursday for tutoring sessions. As the interest in the program grew, there came a need for larger and more adequate facilities. The program moved on to the Towson State campus for the second semester of its first year. By moving on the campus, it became more-progressive then ever. It gave some of the kids in the program their first look at Towson's campus. By the beginning of its second year, the program had about 15 students, all from the Towson area, and fifteen tutors. The activities were expanded to other areas to fulfill the interest of the students These areas of expansion were from simple tutoring to art classes, field trips, and films."" ""This year, I feel that the program has even further developments. With a total of 38 students and 20 tutors, interest in the program has continued to grow. This year also saw for the first time, participation by the parents of the students. Several of the parents expressed interest in 'taking tutoring sessions to prepare to take their high school equivalency exams. This interest has presented a challenge for the tutors involved in the program. But it is a challenge that has been accepted. Next year's program will include a format for tutoring these parents who want to continue their education. Other areas of improvement may include a comprehensive dental health care program set up with the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. But because of the cut in the B.S.U.'s budget, supplemental ways of funding ""Looking For a Roommate?"" ""The Roommate Connection"" Is 0 referral service agency. If interested write to Box 1995, T.S.C. - Opinions on financial aid The following is one student's opinion Qt'l the financial aid situation: ""How can Towson give back 30,000 dollars to Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and request that it be sent to Coppin State College last week? How can Walding make a statement like all needy students who requested money received it, when his associate Schultz is out 'ripping poor students off.' She is doing this in the name of the state law. Issue: She is interfering with the operation of the most important service for underprivileged students on campus, the Study Skills Center. She has stopped the time sheet of dedicated tutors which according to her have worked over their financial aid quota. She has not only stopped their time sheetbut also she insults students by telling them they cannot get paid for their last pay sheet that she stopped. So, who loses out? Not only the hard working tutor but also the poor unexpecting tuties who need this educational support to survive, they are losing out. Of course this does not affect the students who get away with off-campus jobs. Now let's sum up the meaning or the mis-meaning of this in-formation. Only those who can afford to pay for college can work at college."" Another student opinion on fi-nancial aid follows: ""I've found that if you receive financial aid from T.S.C. and not on work study, you can't hold a job on this campus. Yet if you're parents pay your bill, you can hold a regular job. It seems that This year, don't 1st faulty vision interfere with fun, work, or study. If there is money being given away, that action of giving money away should be attacked by the student. Because it is evident that the money can be used right here. This is evident by viewing the situation where students are not being payed because of a lack of funds or over working quotas in view of the needs of students.""
