Approval for FM station received by Bryan Harness WVTS General Manager Paul Dorwin has received a collect telegram from, the FCC, which informed him that WVTS has been granted permission to begin construction of an FM Station, on a frequency of 89.7. ""Once you get a permit, a major obstacle is cleared,"" 4.aid Dorwin. Construction of actual physical facilities, the ordering and delivery of equipment, and the tests of equipment still remain. The station has taken a lot of work on the parts of many people. Dorwin credited former General Manager Jay Harrison, who he said had initiated most of the action. The station has gotten a lot of positive feedback from the administration. Pres. James L. Fisher said that he was ""delighted,"" and added that it had ""been a long time coming."" The station must begin to order equipment within six weeks after its gets approval for construction, and the actual construction must be done within twelve months. After the station is constructed and an antenna is built, the FCC will be contacted, and the station will ask for what is known as ""Program Test Authority,"" explained Dorwin. If that is approved, they will go on the air and test their programming, and then submit their final application for license approval. ""It's a staff morale booster, everybody was freaking out Friday,"" joked Dorwin. ""I would like to see a lot of locally produced programming, so if anyone in the college has any ideas for programming, they should contact the station. We also have to decide on our call letters, because a station in the mid-west uses WVTS for its own."" Gillespie to return to the theatre: Committee studies candidates for new Dean of Students by Susan DeBolt Candidates are currently being studied to replace Dr. C. Richard Gillespie as Vice President of Student Affairs when he leaves July 1 to return to the theatre department. Headed by Dr. Darlene Kelly, the committee has received approximately 300 applications from all over the country for the position and has currently narrowed the field to 25. Kelly reports that that number will be further reduced to three or five names, not ranked in priority, to be given to Towson President James L. Fisher by the end of May. Qualifications most important Kelly emphasized that the committee was most concerned with the qualifications of the candidates. Several necessary characteristics included the ability to administer, strong academic qualifications, and an effective humanist. According to Kelly, the committee also sought an individual who would work particularly with the counseling center and the advising systems. Stressing the need to establish rapport. Kelly said that the candidates had all possessed the necessary qualifications. She called the number of applicants as well as the quality of those applicants ""outstanding.'. Sensitive to needs When questioned as to whether the committee was seeking a minority candidate, Kelly said that the committee had been sensitive to the needs for minority representation on campus but that no special treatment had been given. In many cases, the race of the candidate was not even known. Kelly continued to emphasize the fact that the committee was most interested in the qualifications of the candidates. Other committee members include students Ken Nelson, Allen Mosley. Terry Fernstein, and faculty members Dr. Vincent Colemore, Stanley Sweback, Johrinella Butler, and Gillespie.
