TL20060309-01 "Sharon Leff Associate News Editor When it comes to on-campus food, students always have an opinion, and the strongest opin-ion voiced in a recent survey was the desire to have dining halls stay open later. In response to a Student G o v e r n m e n t Association and the University R e s i d e n c e Government sur-vey this semester, dining services is planning to keep one dining hall open until approximately 10:30 p.m. for a trial period starting in April. The test period will last for four weeks to see if it warrants a perma-nent change. During the trial period while one location stays open late, the other will maintain its normal schedule. Right now it looks as if were leaning toward the Glen and just logistically its just easier to test something at that location, Roy Cubbler, resident district manager of dining servic-es, said. Cubbler said the Glen Dining Hall is a busier location than Newell by almost two to one. T h i r t y - t w o percent of stu-dents would prefer Newell to stay open later, 32 percent said they would prefer Glen and 36 per-cent had no preference at all. Matt Geisler, a sophomore com-munication major, lives in the Glen Towers and is in favor of the late night plan. I think thatd be awesome. I wouldnt have to spend money and order out pizza any more, he said. Luke Brietzke Senior Writer During Towson mens basketballs 84-80 win over Drexel on Feb. 4, Mike Hermann was listening as Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich was interviewed at halftime by WBAL 1090 AMs Gerry Sandusky. Sandusky said the role of the athletic program at any university is important to the image, Hermann recalled. And [Ehrlich] agreed. He said, It is impor-tant to the image, but for right now, for Towson, its even more important. Were trying to reshape the image of this University and so athletics is even more critical now because they play a major role in reshaping that image. As he listened to the governor describe the sig-nificance of the Towson athletic director job, Hermann realized he may have a unique opportunity a chance to really do something special for Towson, he said. Hermann, who served eight years as athletic direc-tor at Niagara University, was introduced as Towsons new athletic director in a Tuesday morning press con-ference in the Minnegan Room of the Johnny Unitas Stadium Field House. In his Towson 2010 plan, President Robert Caret has repeatedly described his ambition to become the second nationally known university in Maryland like NC State to North Carolina, as he says. Caret felt Ehrlichs assessment of the critical nature of Towsons athletic program was accurate. Were on track to be there. As a matter of fact, were very close, Caret said. And if were going to get there, athletics is going to be a big, big piece of it. So we are working very hard to put the parts in place we need to make athletics that cornerstone, or one of those cornerstones that will make that vision come to fruition. Caret, who became president in 2003, discussed the five-year plan he had established with current athletic director Wayne Edwards. He said the University has already fulfilled a num-ber of the objectives, such as making sports fully funded and making assistant coaches full-time.
