The begin-ning of City Hall. Actually, the beginning of the story that is City Hall, a political mystery /drama starring John Cusack, Al Pacino, Bridget Fonda and Danny Aiello. The very first scene is the fle, I'm sure you've all seen it where the camera starts out above the Brooklyn Bridge and Works its way slowly into the Big Apple to pick a story up in the middle and tell us the end. John Cusack is citing a New York City proverb in a faint Louisiana accent as we are taken to Mayor John Pappas played bY Al Pacino. The mayor is giv-mg someone a key to the city, rambling on in that way unique to politicians and Pacino. Across town, where Cusack guides us, is a crime scene three dead. The relationship between Cusack's deputy mayor Kevin Calhoun and Pappas is quickly established. Kevin is Pappas' confidante, his right hand man his nickname is ""Pappy."" Kevin lives the mayor's life. There are two types of New York in this movie: Pappas' New York, where Rogers and Hammerstein are boring and cliche, where people don AIDS ribbons and the women are cool and regal. Then there is Anselmo's New York where people live in the burroughs and lip-sync to Rogers and Hammerstein. Where wives cook big meals and disregard the Mafia boss in their sun room. It could be defined as the dif-ference between old New York and new. Corrupt politicians who function as local party bosses but actually exist only under the supervision of the Mafia or populist mayors with a penchant for big speeches and baby kissing. John Cusack, loved widely for his dear portrayal of Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything and as the object of Angelica Huston's oedipal affections in The Grifters, is Pappas' conscience. Unfortunately, he is also set up to be the conscience of the city when things go wrong for the mayor. My primary and only real major disagreement with the film's text is that the viewer is supposed to accept that even if Pappas went a little awry, Kevin couldn't possibly. My problem with accepting this turn. in the story is that Pappas and Kevin are presented as being so much alike that it isn't inconceivable that, regard-less of his southern breeding, Kevin could end up with the same fissure in his respective baby kissing persona as his See HAIL, page 82 Cello Festival comes to TSU Jennifer Lefkowitz The rowerlight The International Cello Festival has become a prominent Musical event in the United States.
