George McGinty, one of the most suc-cessful molders of athletes in Towson State's sporting history, will retire from his post as women's gymnastics coach after his 15th year. McGinty can be cited as the sole developer of the women's gymnastic team, which has achieved as much, if Women's gymnastic coach George McGinty will retire after the 1980-81 season, leaving behind 15 years of coaching at TSU. McGinty's squad is presently third in the East and is looking for a strong showing at the Eastern Regional tournament. McGinty is the only coach of a women's sport at TSU to receive the honor of coach of the year. McGinty was hired in 1966 by Dr. Minnegan to begin the men's and women's programs, but a few years later devoted his duties solely to the women's program. In 1967 the team, which began as a club sport in '66, was elevated to intercollegiate status and has prospered ever since. In only one year, 1968-69 season, the sport became the first team to cap-ture a national title, as they took the small-college crown. After that, the Tigers moved up a step in divisions, but continued to excel. McGinty's troops continued their success in eastern competition, as well as national. In 1969-70, the squad was 10-1 and placed fourth in the nationals. In 1976-77, as the whole sport of women's gymnastics con-tinued to grow, the Tigers were 14-3 and fifth in the East. McGinty's most impressive achieve-ment came in the 1978-79 season. He led an injury-riddled team to a remarkable 20-3 record. McGinty was named the TSU coach of the year for his job, becoming the first and only women's coach to receive the honor. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, McGinty has also served as an associate professor of physical education at TSU. After put-ting in 25 years of teaching and coaching in the state of Maryland, McGinty feels it is time to move on. ""I've been here [TSU] for 15 years and feel I have served my function. It's just time to do something else,"" \XV? \""*.%N%\ \'? .10 29 GREENMEADOW DRIVE, TIMONIUM Open Mon. Thr ii Sat. 9-5 Thurs. ""It has been fun to watch the program grow,"" said McGinty, whose program grew faster than Jack's beanstalk. ""There is a lot of one-on-one contact in coaching gymnastics and I have enjoyed that."" McGinty, who is also the initiator of Dulaney High Schools' prosperous gymnastics program, said that al-though the women's gymnastics pro-gram has made tremendous strides,. there isn't that much room for improvement at its present status. ""The future is unlimited, but the program isn't going to grow much without more moneys for scholastic aid. ""It used to be that the quality gym-nasts in the late '60s and early '70s would come to Towson just because they liked the program and the school,"" McGinty said. ""But now Mom and Dad are telling the young athletes to go where they are giving money and we just don't have the money at Towson."" McGinty, however, has no qualms with the athletic department, and, unlike many coaches of other non-revenue sports, does not complain about the amount of scholarships he has received. ""I would assume most of the emphasis on athletics has gone to the four revenue-earning sports. I know the people handling the money know what they are doing and trust they will make the right decisions,"" said McGinty. Ironically, McGinty has been put in charge of the search committee to choose his successor, but now the coach, who is a member of the Tufts Gymnastics Workshop, is concentrat-ing his search on an Eastern Regional title for his squad. The squad is presently ranked third in the East, but McGinty feels his steadily-improving squad can capture the crown on March 20-21 at Slippery Rock and April 3-4 at William & Mary. The Tigers are averaging over 128 points a meet, while number-one-ranked Slippery Rock is averaging close to 130. But McGinty feels the Tigers will be peaking for the meet and have a shot at taking the title. ""I don't think we've done as well as we can yet,"" McGinty said. ""Hope-fully, we'll top our best score to date."" Whether or not McGinty's squad captures the title in his last year, McGinty has left his mark on Towson and molded a successful program that will probably flourish even in his absence. Sports Trivia We had a big turnout this week, but only two of you could come with all of the right answers. Despite only two geniuses this week, we did have several honor-able mentions. Mark Frills and David Holtz were the only two with all of them right, so their ballots went into the hat and out came Frills. However, Mark wanted non-alcohol, so he gets the third prize of Sprite. Dave, you were actually second, but you take the case of National Premium. We had seven people who only got one wrong, so they also went into the hat and out came Ken Dobrzykowski. Ken gets to take the case of Schlitz (Please come by and get your prizes. Several winners of past weeks have yet to pick up their winnings). The answers to last week's questions were as follows: 1) In College baseball the designated hitter is always used. Dr. Gehring is a Collegiate umpire, and we all know umpires know their rules, at least Earl Weaver does. If a DH is named, he bats for the pitcher. But if no DH is named, then the pitcher is automatically the DH and both are treated as two different players. You can pinch hit for one and not effect the other de-fensively. If you still don't agree you can register a 'protest with the Towerlight and go argue with Dr. G. 'but we all know where arguing with an umpire leads. (2) As of today, the only unsigned Oriole on the 25 man roster is Dave Ford. (3) Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews hold the Atlanta Braves team record for the most homeruns in a single season. They both clobbered 47. (4) Al Attles coaches the San Diego Clippers Red Holzman coaches the Phoenix Suns. Doug Moe coaches the Denver Nuggets and Paul Silas coaches Golden State. LET'S GET INVOLVED!
