Elaborate presidential inauguration to feature week of panels, plays, monument dedication Mike Morris The Towerlight One week from today begins an eventful five-day ""Celebration Week,"" culminating next Friday with a $56,500 inauguration cere-mony to install Dr. Mark L. Perkins at Towson's 11th president. Faculty presentations, theatrical performances, panel discussions, and a monument dedication are some of the highlights included in next week's activities, drawing upon resources from various campus departments. ""I think as these things come to pass I've been really impressed by the desire of the campus communi-ty to do something like this,"" Perkins said of the inauguration. ""And they have prevailed upon me to help position the campus for the future, and it's impressive what they're doing and I'm kind of one part of a larger celebration."" L'oreal Smith, a Towson representative for the University System of 4/ Maryland Student Council, said that while thousands of dollars are being spent on the inaugu-ration, it's a rare 1 opportunity for the Towson community to come together. ""It seems like a great sum of money,"" the senior political science major said. ""But what everyone has to realize is that this day is not just for Dr. Perkins it's for the whole University to celebrate."" Perkins said the celebration is a significant statement about the beginning of a new time, and added that it's also a celebration of the foundation on which Towson was built. ""It is a celebration, essentially, of the great contribution this URA University has made to the 2I0 state of Maryland,"" he 1, said. When Towson offi-cials began planning the inauguration, they consulted the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's ""Presidential Inaugurations: Planning for More than Pomp and Circumstance,"" a 121-page ""bible"" on presidential inaugurations. The book gives advice on every-thing from musical interludes to the inaugural address, suggesting that even the most beautifully executed ceremony will fail if the president's address is not all that it can and should be. ""My remarks are going to be about our 135 years of commitment and what I sense from what people have told me that we are very, very good at,"" Perkins said. ""And then it's about dreaming what that really means now and could be in the future. And it's probably an oppor-tunity to demonstrate as well, the greatness of the experience that this University provides."" Lisa Turowski, a part-time faculty member in the mass communica-tion department, decided to cancel her 11 a.m. class next Friday so she could attend the ceremony in the Towson Center. She said if students attend, it will help foster a sense of community.
