Bush speak for about five minutes from the White House Wednesday at 10:15 p.m., shortly after bombing began in Iraq. The air strikes began less than two hours after Bush's 48-hour deadline for Saddam Hussein to leave the country had passed. From staff reports Reports immediately following President George W. Bush's 10:15 p.m. address from the White House Wednesday suggested that the air strike that began shortly after 8 p.m. was targeted directly at Saddam Hussein. U.S. intelligence reports showed that Hussein was meeting with Iraqi officials in an underground bunker near Baghdad. When presented with this ""target of opportunity,"" forces dropped 2,000 pounds of bunker-buster bombs on the loca-tion. There has not yet been confir-mation that Hussein was in the area. The bombing began less than two hours after Bush's 48-hour deadline for Hussein to leave Iraq passed. The decision to begin the strike came Wednesday afternoon follow-ing a series of National Security Council meetings. The White House reported that Bush made the deci-sion between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. when he was informed that intelli-gence reports suggested Hussein would not leave Iraq. Students in Paws watched Bush's national address, and many were relieved that the conflict was finally getting underway. ""I think it's good,"" said sopho-more criminal justice major Steve Johnson. ""I think it's about time that we actually did something about it. Saddam had 12 years to prevent this. He never took care of it. I think it's about time we took care of it for him."" Sophomore criminal justice major Nicole Beutner agreed, saying she has supported the war all along. ""I feel that he had 12 years to dis-arm and he had 12 years to prevent this, and somebody needs to stand up to him,"" she said. I think we're doing the right thing because we can't live up to See ATTACK, page 6 Teach-in showcases diverse points of view regarding confrontation with Middle East Margaret Wu The Towerlight The Student Government Association sponsored a teach-in discussion in the Potomac Lounge Wednesday afternoon in which about 300 students, faculty and staff gathered to learn about the issues surrounding the war with Iraq. Four professors discussed their views about the war and sought to give students a clear understanding of the background information per-taining to their differing views. Mass communication and com-munication studies professor Richard Vatz, international rela-tions assistant professor Linda Bishai, political science professor Joseph Rudolph, and geography and environmental planning assis-tant professor Charles Schmitz were the speakers on a panel moderated by WMAR Channel 2 News anchor Jamie Costello. SGA Attorney General Cal Bowman opened the discussion by introducing Costello to the audi-ence. Costello then invited each panel member to state his or her view about the pre-emptive military strike against Iraq and the reason-ing behind it before he began giving them questions about hot-button issues. Vatz used his speech to mention a vote planned by the SGA for an anti-war resolution that has been tabled until March 31.
