The committee met earlier this month to review candidates who applied after former TU provost and president of San Jose State University Bob Caret withdrew his candidacy in early December, three days before he was expected to be appointed to the position by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. ""We've had some very, very good resumes sent in since the end of last semester,"" said James Clements, chair of the committee. ""As a com-mittee, we're continuing to move forward."" Ten applicants were interviewed in the fall, and 10 more will be or have been interviewed this year, according to Clements. Towson officials have said eight finalists were recently interviewed at an Anne Arundel hotel within the vicinity of the Baltimore- Washington International Airport in Linthicum. Clements would not confirm the location of the talks, saying that the same hotel may be used again because the committee is File Photo Committee Chair James Clements Snow, ice cause classes to be canceled Saul Stoogenke The Towerlight Megan Heflin, a women's studies graduate student, waits at a public bus stop on Osler Drive Wednesday afternoon while a plow clears the sidewalk. ""The purpose of these meetings is for us to meet them and for them to meet us,"" Clements said, adding that the committee is interested in each of the finalists' accomplish-ments, leadership style and vision for the University. Sometime within the next two weeks the committee plans to nar-row down the candidates to 3 to 5 finalists, just as they did last semes-ter. At that time the group will decide what direction the search will take. The committee has three options, the first being to keep the search ""modified open"" as they did with Caret, allowing an additional group of 25 campus leaders to probe the finalists before submission to the Regents. They can also choose to have an open forum, inviting the whole campus community to come and question finalists. Or the com-mittee can forward the names directly to the Regents. ""We've had some very, very good resumes sent in since the end of last semester. As a committee, we're continuing to move forward."" James Clements search committee chair ""My guess is that it will remain modified open or become open,"" Clements said regarding the search's future. Due to the strong feedback in favor of an open search the commit-tee received at a forum held towards the end of last semester, Clements is doubtful that the search will become completely closed. Jan Greenwood, TU's lead search consultant, is said to still be making calls and recruiting candidates. Greenwood recently came under fire for another search she's leading. Some faculty and administrators at Florida Atlantic University perceive Greenwood as manipulating the search process there, according to the Palm Beach Post, which report-ed that Bob Caret was also a front-runner for the FAU presidency. Florida's Lt. Gov. Frank Brogan is now the front-runner for the posi-tion of FAU president. This is mak-ing some officials wonder whether or not the trend of politicians-turned- university-presidents will happen at Towson.
