tl20080214-01 "Sharon Leff Editor in Chief Baltimore � He may not have been their first choice, but as the presidential race narrows, Illinois Senator Barack Obama is gaining support from some Towson stu-dents. Obama, who spoke to a nearly full 1st Mariner Arena Monday evening, won the Democratic primaries in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. Tuesday night, moving him ahead of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for the first time in their race for the party�s nomination. Crowds began pouring into the arena around 2 p.m. Monday but the senator didn�t speak until 5:30 p.m. Obama pushed the message of change and hope while the crowd chanted, �It�s your time.� He said the country couldn�t afford to wait to fix schools, to stop global warming, and to bring the troops home. �Our nation is at war. Our planet is in peril. And a dream so many generations fought for seems to be slipping away,� Obama said. He talked about helping college students afford tuition and keeping them on their parents� health care until they are 25 years old. Lauren McDade, a sophomore political science major and a mem-ber of the Progressive Democrats of Towson, attended the rally but had previously pulled for John Edwards, the Democratic senator from North Carolina, to get the nomination. �On a personal note, [Obama�s] not far enough to the left for me,� McDade said.
