Katie Barth began as a freshman at Towson in 1997 like most new college
students: naive to the lifestyle, completely unsure of her direction in life, and
dazed at the prospect of searching for an entirely new group of friends.
What she didn’t expect was the stalking.
Barth is a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,
and mid-freshman year, both she and her partner began receiving threats on
Barth’s life.
“It started out as small as things like scraps of paper with threatening mes¬
sages on them,” Barth said. “Then they started leaving my partner voicemails
with full descriptions of what I was wearing: T just saw Katie leaving Tower D
dressed in a full black sweatshirt and jeans and white shoes. Let’s see if she
comes back. '"The fear was so much that Barth dropped out of school, return¬
ing home to her conservative parents to reveal, against her will, her sexuality.

The University System of Maryland Board of Regents
voted unanimously on Friday to approve the 2010-2020
Strategic Plan, a document that has been in the works

next decade.
A strategic plan is constructed and voted on once
every 10 years, according to USM media relations and
web manager Mike Lurie, and outlines key visions and
goals for the entire University System.
"We must greatly increase educational attainment
and make the needed investments in research and
scholarship if the United States is to remain a world
leader in creativity, innovation and the knowledge
economy," USM chancellor William "Brit" Kirwan said
during Friday’s session at Coppin State University.
"The USM 2020 Strategic Plan positions the state
to be a leader in educational attainment and to have a
globally competitive innovation-driven economy."
Towson University president Robert Caret, who sits
on the Council of University System Presidents, said
that since the USM Strategic Plan has been approved,
Towson University will take the goals, themes and key
action items found in the plan and see them through.
“For example, if there’s a part relating to economic
