tl19901206_000 "Men's basketball wins Beltway Classic (see story p. 10) Vol. 86 No. 13 Maryland's Largest Student Weekly December 6, 1990 The Tower 1 Published by the students of Towson State University, Towson Football scores with Senate vote By Lisa Goldberg Managing Editor After a discussion that lasted nearly two hours and in-cluded intense debate over the importance of sports within the University structure, the University Senate voted yesterday against a motion to suspend the foot-ball program. The motion was defeated by a vote of 12-6, with one abstention. Five of the 12 members voting to save foot-ball were student representatives. ""While football might not be a specific reason that the majority of lbwson State students come to school, I do feel that it's a very important part of the University as a whole,"" said Brent Harris, a student representative to the senate. ""Without some of the extracurricular activi-ties that we have going on like football, the University is not a university to me."" ""Students rve talked to feel that the football program is a necessity for a well-rounded university, that it's an outlet for excitement and competition,"" said David Kraus, another student representative. ""[Some stu-dents] come here in part to play football as a possible career, just as Dave Meggett and Sean Landeta ended up doing."" Although University President Hoke Smith could not attend the meeting because of a prior engagement, he sent a letter to the senate expressing his views on foot-ball.
